Boris Johnson is getting a £9million White House-style 'situation room' to command terror emergencies and military operations. The state-of-the-art bunker in the basement of the Cabinet Office will have huge display screens allowing the PM to track events in real time. It will be known as the Situation Centre, or SitCen, and should be up and running this summer - with claims it will reduce the time taken to brief ministers from 'weeks to minutes'. The plan is a centrepiece of the huge defence, security and foreign policy review due to be unveiled by Mr Johnson on March 16. The project has been highlighted after it emerged that £2.6million has been spent on an overhaul of No9 Downing Street to stage US-esque televised press briefings. Meanwhile, a major row is raging over claims Mr Johnson's official flat above No11 is having an upgrade overseen by his fiancee Carrie Symonds, with the cost feared to be around £200,000. No10 sources told the Sunday Times coronavirus had … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson will get £9m White House-style ‘situation centre’ to command terror emergencies and military operations

How George Floyd’s death reignited a worldwide movement
For eight minutes and 46 seconds, police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on the neck of George Floyd, a 46-year old Black man, on a street in Minneapolis on May 25 last year. Another officer, Alexander Kueng, had his knees on Floyd's upper legs whille their colleague J. Thomas Lane gripped Floyd's handcuffed arms. "Please, please, please, I can't breathe," Floyd gasped, pleading about 20 times. His final words reminded many of those of Eric Garner, who died during a police chokehold in 2014 . When Floyd fell unconscious, the officers didn't move. Chauvin and the other officers released their grip only when an ambulance arrived — nearly two minutes after Keung first reported he could not find a pulse, according to prosecutors . Floyd was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. George Floyd was unarmed. At the time, according to a statement by the Minneapolis Police Department, he appeared to be intoxicated and "suffering medical distress." The police said they were responding … [Read more...] about How George Floyd’s death reignited a worldwide movement

Donald Trump’s Iran fight could have dangerous consequences

Donald Trump playing into hands of Iranian hardliners
For months there's been speculation President Donald Trump was about to torpedo the Iran nuclear deal. The multinational agreement took years to negotiate and is designed to restrain Iran's ability to make the enriched uranium it needs to build the bomb. It was, said the Obama administration and its European allies, the best way of preventing a nuclear arms race in the most volatile region on Earth, the Middle East. Even Israel, opposed to the idea throughout its negotiation, agreed that undoing it once it had been signed would be counterproductive and dangerous. :: Trump talks of 'calm before the storm' Advertisement It is now clear Mr Trump is not going to scupper the deal. He may still refuse to certify it but that is largely for domestic political consumption to look tough in front of his base of supporters. Power to destroy the deal lies in Congress, which could reimpose sanctions on Iran. That would kill the deal but there is no sign of that … [Read more...] about Donald Trump playing into hands of Iranian hardliners
