Former British number one Tim Henman has told Novak Djokovic to ‘get vaccinated’ in order to avoid any future saga like the one which has seen him sensationally deported from Australia. The Serb was stripped of his visa by Australian immigration minister Alex Hawke over the weekend after making errors on the vaccine exemption form which he had used to enter the country. The Australian government feared that Djokovic’s ongoing presence would stoke anti-vaxx sentiment in the country, which has been placed under some of the strictest Covid-19 regulations on the planet since the pandemic took hold in early 2020, and a court failed to uphold his appeal over the weekend. Djokovic cannot defend his Australian Open title and will now have to wait for the chance to win a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam after returning home to Belgrade via Dubai, and Henman says there is a very simple way he can guarantee his spot at future majors. ‘The one point I would make is that to be a … [Read more...] about Tim Henman tells Novak Djokovic to ‘get vaccinated’ after Australia deportation controversy

Andy Murray says the Novak Djokovic saga has ‘not been good for anyone’, while Nick Kyrgios has appeared to take a swipe at Australia’s decision to deport the tennis world number one after he lost his visa appeal in court. On Sunday, judges upheld the government’s decision to cancel Djokovic’s visa and kick him out of the country on ‘health and good order’ grounds. The world number one arrived in Australia on January 6 hoping to defend his Australian Open title and add to his 20 Grand Slams. But Australia Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used his ministerial powers to cancel Djokovic’s visa for a second time , after a first cancellation over not following Covid entry rules was overturned by a different judge. In a statement, Djokovic has said he was ‘extremely disappointed’ but would accept the ruling , and British star Murray has now given his take on the saga. ‘It is not great for the tournament because it is better when all of the top players are … [Read more...] about Andy Murray hopes for no repeat of Novak Djokovic ‘mess’ while Nick Kyrgios takes swipe at Australia deportation verdict
Novak Djokovic has officially left Australia following his visa cancellation saga, the country’s Immigration Minister has confirmed. Today’s decision to deport the world No.1 tennis player ended a dramatic 11-day legal dispute over whether Djokovic would be able to play at the Australian Open. A statement from Hawke read: ‘I welcome today’s unanimous decision by the Full Federal Court of Australia, upholding my decision to exercise my power under the Migration Act to cancel Mr Novak Djokovic’s visa in the public interest. ‘Australia’s strong border … [Read more...] about Novak Djokovic officially leaves Australia as Immigration Minister Alex Hawke releases fresh statement
Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has sent a message of support to countryman Novak Djokovic after he was deported by Australian authorities. On the eve of the Australian Open, Djokovic’s final effort to remain in the country failed after his visa appeal was rejected on Sunday. Djokovic’s attempts to remain in Australia were passionately defended by his family and his loyal legion of fans. He has also received the backing of another star of Serbian sport in Matic, who represented his country 48 times before international retirement in 2020. Novak Djokovic's deportation from Australia for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 dealt a final blow to his hopes of winning his 21st Grand Slam trophy there. But while it brought to an end a long-running visa saga that made headlines around the world, experts told Newsweek about the ramifications it could have on upcoming sporting tournaments amid the ongoing and often polarized debate over COVID-19 vaccine requirements. Djokovic, the world's top men's tennis player, jetted out of Australia on Monday as the Australian Open got underway in Melbourne. He had argued in an Australian court that he should be permitted to stay and complete in the tournament because a recent COVID-19 infection provided the basis for a medical exemption from Australia's vaccination rules. But the court upheld Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's decision to cancel the Serbian's visa . Hawke had said Djokovic's presence could be a threat to public order and encourage anti-vaccine sentiment amid a … [Read more...] about Djokovic vaccine saga has global implications for sporting calendar 2022
