A petition against North East Lincolnshire Council’s plans to cut the Council Tax Support Scheme has received hundreds of signatures. The petition was started by North East Lincolnshire's Labour group, who have been vocal about the proposed cuts. Writing in the petition the Labour group said: “Conservative-led North East Lincolnshire Council has started a “consultation” for residents for them to agree how many extra hundreds of pounds of Council Tax will be charged to vulnerable people, including young families and the disabled. “This so-called consultation is a sham and an attack on people hardest hit by austerity. There is no option to offer more support to these vulnerable groups, or even to retain the current level. “Labour has to date been able to stop these proposals, but now the Conservatives have forced them through without debate or discussion. “We the undersigned demand that this consultation is scrapped immediately and that the Tory … [Read more...] about Hundreds sign petition against Council Tax Support Scheme cuts

Nearly 8,000 households in North East Lincolnshire will be affected by cuts to the Council Tax Support Scheme. Three options are included in a consultation launched by North East Lincolnshire Council - with all of them resulting in a doubled bill for those on low incomes. The options for disability benefit claimants are for it to remain the same at a maximum 75 per cent relief, drop to a 65 per cent reduction, or double the current bill. In the North East Lincolnshire area, there are currently 7,825 working age households receiving the council tax support scheme, including 3,575 households with disability benefits, 1,292 households with children under five, 400 employed households, and 2,558 households that are unemployed, claiming benefits, or otherwise eligible for it. A: There are two types of maintenance payments, voluntary maintenance payments and those which are made by the courts and are legally enforceable. Voluntary maintenance payments are agreed between spouses, without any legal agreement in place, according to Eileen Devereux, commercial director at Taxback.com. These payments are ignored for income tax purposes, and no tax relief is available. Legally enforceable maintenance payments are payments to a former spouse agreed under a court order or deed of separation. This is tax-deductible when it is made towards a former spouse, and you as the spouse potentially paying maintenance can have your tax band adjusted to take account of the amount being paid. However, you cannot claim tax relief on any amount of payment made for the benefit of your children. If you are required to pay periodically towards both, tax relief will only be available on the portion of the payment to your wife, where it is agreed by law, Ms Devereux said. It might be … [Read more...] about Can tax be deducted from maintenance payments to an ex?
Ireland must do all it can to prevent being caught in Europe’s political slow lane as the leading contenders line up to run the EU and European Cental Bank, writes Kyran Fitzgerald.Europe’s leaders have finally come up with the names of the people they would like to see filling the top jobs across the union for the next few years. As far as Ireland is concerned, three of those jobs really matter: the presidency of the European Commission; the presidency of the Council of Ministers; and last but certainly not least, the presidency of the ECB. It was clear for some time that the frontrunner for the commission job, the centre-right German MEP Manfred Weber had failed to gain sufficient traction. The baton for a while appeared to pass to the Dutch socialist Frans Timmermans, a straight-talking politician. However, he was knocked off course by an alliance of rightist east European leaders and western European politicians from the centre-right European People’s Party, which … [Read more...] about Challenges as Europe’s top jobs are filled
