You have to admire the ambition of an inner-city high school that calls itself Johnson College Prep. Especially when a third of the students have no permanent home and many dodge violence just to get to class. But the students in this Chicago public school believe in their name. They've done the work. They've been accepted to college. Trouble is, few have the money to go. Johnson College Prep needed something like a miracle. And we were there when the miracle called Hope Chicago arrived. Johnson College Prep, on Chicago's South Side, embraces nearly 500 students. Jonas Cleaves: Every student that walks in our door deserves an opportunity to be engaged by staff members who love them for no other reason except the fact that they are one of our students. Principal Jonas Cleaves knows the names and the dreams in the halls of Johnson College Prep. Scott Pelley: College is your middle name. Jonas Cleaves: Absolutely. Absolutely. That's why we're here. We want kids to have a shot. … [Read more...] about Hope Chicago: Charity sending students from Chicago high schools to college for free

Do Apple’s premium AirPods need fixing? I have some ideas
The year is 2024 and Apple is announcing the discontinuation of its AirPods Max over-the-ear headphones. The sentiment around the news is a mix of disappointment and disinterest. On one hand, the critics and consumers all agreed these were wonderful sounding headphones. The ANC and transparency modes were each best in class. The build quality was pristine. People who bought the headphones are extremely disappointed that their products will fade into extinction with no replacements on the horizon. On the other hand, nearly everyone who wanted to buy AirPods Max couldn't afford them, and thus, a quick malaise of indifference fell over the niche product's demise. This future is easy to predict because it's is a close reality of what has already happened to the HomePod, Apple's home Wi-Fi speaker. The HomePod was remarkable when it was first released: It had a compact size, yet songs still boomed with deep richness. Five years after its debut, in June 2017, the HomePod still provides a … [Read more...] about Do Apple’s premium AirPods need fixing? I have some ideas
12 Celebrities who gave up major roles, from Zendaya to Zooey Deschanel
SOMETIMES the stars align for celebrities when it comes to acting gigs – and other times, snagging a role is a bit too far out of reach for a myriad of reasons. Here are 12 stars who gave up major roles, from Zendaya to Zooey Deschanel and beyond. ZENDAYA Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B Zendaya certainly isn't starving for roles, so that may be why she was comfortable removing herself from the 2014 biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. She was originally cast to play Aaliyah, but exited the film in June 2014, a month before Nickelodeon actress Alexandra Shipp was announced as the lead. In a series of since-delete videos, the Dune star revealed why she wasn't comfortable working on the Lifetime project. "Let me just explain something. "The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t talented enough or I wasn’t black enough. "It had absolutely nothing to do with that,” she … [Read more...] about 12 Celebrities who gave up major roles, from Zendaya to Zooey Deschanel
Biff, Chip and Kipper book pulped by Oxford publishers in racism row
A popular children’s book from the Biff, Chip and Kipper series has been withdrawn following complaints that its portrayal of Muslim people was racist. Oxford University Press (OUP) has pulped copies of The Blue Eye, in which the young characters are transported to a foreign land with the help of a magic key. The children find themselves in a busy street market, which appears to be somewhere in the Middle East , where the men wear white turbans and a woman is dressed in a niqab. “Let’s stay together,” says Biff. “The people don’t seem very friendly.” Another character, Wilf, says: “I don’t like this place. It’s scary.” OUP said it commissioned an independent review of the Biff and Chip books after receiving complaints about their content. The publisher said: “The book was taken out of print completely in March this year following an independent review, and is no longer available to purchase. “OUP destroyed its own remaining stock of the book, although a small number … [Read more...] about Biff, Chip and Kipper book pulped by Oxford publishers in racism row
Jonas Kaufmann: Opera’s star tenor
60 Minutes has always had a soft spot for the opera. Maybe because, like us, opera is in the storytelling business – with big, sweeping improbable tales and characters. Tonight we introduce you to one of its star storytellers – a 52-year-old tenor from Germany, named Jonas Kaufmann. Critics applaud Kaufmann's singing, range and swagger on stage. Others point to his history of high-profile cancellations. Interrupted by the pandemic, we have been following the tenor for years. Now, we finally raise the curtain, so you can hear Jonas Kaufmann make one of opera's most famous arias, his own. Even if you don't know its name, it's likely you've heard, and perhaps even hummed along to "Nessun Dorma." Jonas Kaufmann: It's very difficult to describe-- or define the magic of this song. In the first year of the pandemic, Jonas Kaufmann enchanted an audience desperate for live performances at the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert. Jonas Kaufmann: If you look carefully at this … [Read more...] about Jonas Kaufmann: Opera’s star tenor

Kenneth Branagh gets the part of a lifetime
This week heralded the release of some disconcerting photographs of Sir Kenneth Branagh with a blond mop, dressed up to play Boris Johnson in the forthcoming Sky production This England. The series will dramatise the Government’s response to the Covid pandemic. The role is a career first for Sir Kenneth – starring alongside Andrew Buchan as Matt Hancock and Ophelia Lovibond as Carrie Johnson – and he seems to have coveted the role of prime minister since his school days. “History is the very stuff of drama, and Miss Sheppard, our history teacher, loved the theatre in it as much as I did,” he wrote in a 1989 memoir I dusted off this week. “I loved the personalities – Parnell, Lloyd George, MacDonald, Churchill – and wanted to play them all.” Perhaps he will draw on his favourite role of that school year, which saw him play the bumbling Mr Toad in Wind in the Willows. The four-time Bafta winner said: “It was one of the most enjoyable parts I’ve ever played”. Becoming typecast is … [Read more...] about Kenneth Branagh gets the part of a lifetime
