Police may be given powers to search cars and homes without warrants in a new drugs crackdown. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has vowed to give police extra powers following a spate of recent overdose deaths at music festivals. Following talks with NSW police, Ms Berejiklian has agreed to introduce special drug supply prohibition orders, which will allow officers to search the houses and cars of anyone convicted of serious drug offences without a warrant. Claim Labour will build 100,000 council houses a year by the end of the next parliament, a significant increase on the 6,287 built in 2018-19. In addition, there will be 50,000 housing association homes. Background The party has promised a “housing revolution” focused on a programme to build council houses. It plans to provide the homes for social rent – currently this is linked to local incomes, but the party is proposing changing this to link it to rents on the open market. The 50,000 housing association homes will be “genuinely affordable” the party says. They will need to meet new rules on cost – rents will either be social rents, or linked to a third of local incomes, while homes to buy will have mortgage costs linked to a third of local incomes. Reality The target of 100,000 council homes is in line with the needs identified by housing experts. The property company Savills, for example, found that there were 100,000 households who could not … [Read more...] about Is Labour’s pledge to build 100,000 council houses achievable?
Labour will promise to tackle Britain’s housing crisis by “building for the many”, setting aside £75bn over five years to fund the most dramatic increase in council home construction since the second world war. As he launches Labour’s manifesto, Jeremy Corbyn will pledge that by the end of its first term in office, a Labour government would build 100,000 council houses a year, and 50,000 social homes through housing associations – all of them to high environmental standards. Only 6,287 council homes were built in 2018-19. The rapid increase would be paid for using half of the £150bn “social transformation fund” recently announced by the shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, which will be funded through government borrowing. The shadow housing secretary, John Healey, told the Guardian: “We’re talking about a new era of council housing. “And the significance of it is that building on this scale allows us not just to build … [Read more...] about Labour to unveil £75bn social housing plan to ‘build for the many’
Police are threatening to arrest vigilantes if they continue to tear down tributes left by the family of a dead burglar, it has been revealed. A 'disgraceful' memorial to Henry Vincent, who was killed by a pensioner he tried to rob, was torn down for a fourth time in three days and police faced increasing pressure to 'bulldoze' the shrine for good. The 'battle of the bouquets' outside the home of Richard Osborn-Brooks is spiralling out of control after a turf war broke out between locals and the family of career criminal Vincent. Now police officers are believed to be closely watching the memorial and have told neighbours to make no attempt to remove the flowers, threatening to arrest them for 'breaching the peace'. Chief Superintendent Simon Dobinson, Lewisham Borough commander, said officers had a responsibility to provide assurances to local residents while also respecting the wishes of family to mark the 'tragic death'. Firefighters fitted smoke alarms today at the home … [Read more...] about Fury as police ‘threaten to ARREST locals’ for tearing down family flowers left after ‘tragic death’ of burglar while fire brigade fit smoke alarms in house OAP has had to flee due to fear of reprisals from travellers
