THE third series of Victoria continues TONIGHT on ITV. This third season focuses on 1948 and the start of the Chartist movement - but did the Queen really retreat to Osborne House during this time? Here's what we know... Where is Osborne House? Osborne House is a former royal residence in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The house was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat. Prince Albert designed the house himself in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo. The builder was Thomas Cubitt, the London architect and builder whose company built the main exterior of Buckingham Palace for the royal couple in 1847. An earlier smaller house on the site was demolished to make way for a new and far larger building. Did Queen Victoria and Prince Albert really retreat to Osborne House during the Chartist Movement? The year 1848 was an unsettling time in England with revolutions taking place across Europe including the French … [Read more...] about Where is Osborne House located and did Queen Victoria and Prince Albert really retreat there?

Jim Reineking USA TODAY Published 12:57 AM EDT Apr 12, 2019 An unauthorized flying object was an uninvited guest at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox earned a walk-off win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night. The unidentified drone hovered over the playing field at Fenway, causing a bit of a ruckus. It was enough of a distraction that Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland had to step out of the batter's box for a moment when he noticed the flying object during his ninth-inning at-bat. "It kind of threw me off," Moreland said. "I looked up and was like, 'They’re not supposed to have these around here, are they?' I figured I’d try to hit it or something." Moreland managed to get it together and hit a game-tying double, scoring Mookie Betts, who had walked. Moreland was later replaced on the basepaths by Eduardo Nunez, who scored on Rafael Devers' walk-off single. It was Devers' his first career walk-off RBI. The Red Sox won, 7-6, for their first home … [Read more...] about Fenway Park drone: Object flies over Red Sox game vs. Blue Jays
The widely recognised story of how Major League Baseball’s spring training league in Florida came to be known as the Grapefruit League is, perhaps appropriately for a sport so built on the wacky and the weird, unconventional. The tale goes that aviator Ruth Law had been throwing golf balls from her aeroplane to advertise a golf course in 1915, and to promote spring training, someone suggested throwing a baseball. Wilbert Robinson, manager of the then Brooklyn Dodgers, agreed to try to catch the baseball. Flying 525 feet above Robinson, Law realised she had forgotten her baseball and threw a grapefruit that she had. When Robinson tried to catch it, the grapefruit exploded in his face. Gabe Lacques USA TODAY Published 5:20 PM EDT Mar 17, 2019 Somehow, baseball’s never-ending off-season has just two weeks remaining. Through the grim and punishing free-agency period – which now never ends – to the overlong ritual of spring training – which does, in fact, have an expiration date – most of the game’s business has been resolved. But jobs and contracts and even rules remain unresolved, even as the spring carnivals in Florida and Arizona prepare to pack up and head for colder climes. Some issues are more pressing than others. Here are a few that bear watching – or not – as pitchers stretch out and everyone gets a little stir crazy for real baseball: Whither Craig Kimbrel? Not hard to blame Kimbrel – whose ERA and save percentage are superior to Mariano Rivera’s – for shooting a little higher than the record sums Kenley Jansen ($80 million) and Aroldis Chapman ($86 million) received after the 2016 … [Read more...] about MLB 2019: What to watch as spring training hits home stretch
Bosses have explained why pictures showed overflowing bins at the back of a Raynesway pub. The pictures were shared hundreds of times from Facebook page Spotted Alvaston after they were posted yesterday. They show two skips piled high with bin bags, around a dozen bin bags on the floor nearby, and what appear to be potatoes and carrots on the floor. It is understood that the pictures were taken on Monday. A spokeswoman for the Blue Jay pub, in Linville Close, said the area has since been cleaned. She said: "These photos appear to have been uploaded following a very busy weekend at the pub which has caused the overflow. "We can assure customers that the bins were collected the next day and, as part of normal procedure, the back yard has since been cleaned." … [Read more...] about Bosses explain these pictures of overflowing bins at The Blue Jay
