The first South Sea Islander (SSI) Member of Parliament for Queensland, Stephen Andrew, has arrived with the Speaker of Queensland Parliament, Curtis Pitt and his secretary at Port Vila International Airport yesterday.While the Queensland delegation was met on arrival by the Speaker of Parliament, Esmon Saimon, it was also met by Paramount Chief John Tarilama and Chief Alicta Vuti of the Port Vila City Council of Chiefs of Ambae.The delegation proceeded to the public lounge to a traditional drama symbolizing the arrival of the first white settlers.The drama was organised by the Ambae Port Vila City Council of Chiefs and their people.Chief Vuti quickly intervened to stop the warriors and offered the new arrivals a coconut drink to symbolize peace.The Queensland MP seemed to have enjoyed the encounter as he was captured smiling at the warriors with their war clubs.The delegation was understood to have paid a courtesy call to renew longstanding relations with the Office of the Head of … [Read more...] about First South Sea Islander MP with Ambae connection arrives

Voters in Hull and the East Riding go to the polls today in the European elections. Polling stations opened at 7am and will close at 10pm tonight. Unlike council and national elections, today's contest is not being decided using the traditional first-past-the-post system. Instead, proportional voting will decide who represents the Yorkshire and Humber region in the European Parliament. Nine different parties are fielding candidates in our region with six seats up for grabs. Voters need to mark their choice for a single party on the ballot paper. However, because of the current uncertainty over Brexit, it's not clear how long any of the successful candidates will actually serve as MEPs. People in Wirral will head to the polls next month to vote in what could be the most crucial Local Election in years.
