Thatch price hike ‘could force homeowners to sell’

August 8, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Owners of idyllic "chocolate box" homes could be forced to sell up as the price of thatch surges, an expert has warned. The price of a bundle of water reed has doubled to about £7 in 18 months, says the National Society of Master Thatchers (NSMT). Britain uses 5m bundles a year, largely imported from countries including Ukraine, where war has hit supplies. NSMT secretary Andrew Raffle said rising costs made replacement thatch unviable for many homeowners. "There is still a demand for people wanting to live in a thatched property. It's an important part of our national heritage," Mr Raffle said. "Inevitably, because of the rising costs, some will no longer be able to afford to continue living in them." Thatched properties often have listed status, meaning roofs have to be repaired or replaced using … [Read more...] about Thatch price hike ‘could force homeowners to sell’

Cost of living crisis: How rising prices are affecting people in Scotland

July 24, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Connor Gillies Published 24 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing With holiday season in full swing, BBC Scotland's consumer affairs correspondent Connor Gillies has taken a trip of his own. He wanted to find out how people across the country are coping with the rising price of energy, food and fuel. In four locations over four days, the phrase "cost of living" was greeted with a dreadfully familiar sigh from everyone we met. From Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae, to the Kelpies in Falkirk, Pitlochry and Fort William, our journey showed that every community in Scotland has a unique experience of this crisis. The Barclay family I met Ayrshire couple Gordon and Seonaid Barclay at a caravan park in Pitlochry. They described the current price rises and the impact it is having on their lives as "horrible". Seonaid said: "I shop around now and look for … [Read more...] about Cost of living crisis: How rising prices are affecting people in Scotland

Boris Johnson will not intervene in cost of living crisis as that is ‘for future prime minister’

August 8, 2022 by news.sky.com

Downing Street has rejected calls for Boris Johnson to summon an emergency COBRA meeting to deal with the cost of living crisis. Gordon Brown, the former Labour prime minister, has called for Mr Johnson to meet with his two potential successors and thrash out a financial package of measures before energy bills soar in October. He said people will go cold and hungry this winter if urgent action isn't taken now, telling Sky News he was seeing poverty in his hometown in Fife " that I did not expect to see ever again in my lifetime ". Politics Hub: Brown slams 'vacuum' at heart of government A leading business group, the CBI, also urged Mr Johnson to "act now" as they set out four actions the government could take to ease the impact of the crisis. Three potentially fatal flaws in Manchester City’s title defence

August 6, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Manchester City are away to West Ham on Sunday as they begin the defence of their Premier League title. There are three reasons that the campaign is not a foregone conclusion. Lack of squad depth Statistically speaking, Manchester City have a 77 per cent chance of wining the Premier League this season; such is Pep Guardiola’s title-winning strike rate in his 13 years of management at the elite level. But this summer has featured some calculated gambles, most notably with the departures of four key players — Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko — who made a combined 92 Premier League appearances and scored 23 goals last season. And while Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez are hardly shabby replacements, a thin squad has been rendered even thinner. By a generous assessment, City’s first team squad numbers 20 at the moment, for a team that may play more than 60 games this season, plus the players' World Cup commitments. Guardiola … [Read more...] about Three potentially fatal flaws in Manchester City’s title defence

August 8, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

A PROFESSIONAL dog sitter has said that she makes £750 a week and loves her job but there is one type of dog she would never look after. Katie Glass stumbled upon the dream career when she used an app called Rover to book a dog-sitter for £60 while she attended a job interview. Seeing pictures of her beloved furry companion enjoying herself while she packed onto the boiling Tube led her to download Rover that very evening - and within just 48 hours she had four booking requests. But as cute as they are, there is one dog that Katie refuses to babysit - and it may come as a surprise. The seasoned dog-sitter says that she has a "no puppies" rule after her first customer Arti caused a lot of clean-up with his boundless energy, Katie told The Times : "Arti, a bouncy, bitey, lurcher-doodle puppy arrives and immediately makes herself at home digging up my flowerbeds, tearing around my house, constantly threatening to escape the garden and attack next door’s chickens, and … [Read more...] about I’m a dog sitter – I charge £750 a WEEK and I love my job… but there’s one type of dog I won’t look after
