Dad, 40, who cut himself on car engine has arm amputated after five-year sepsis fight
A dad who had his right arm amputated five years after cutting it while fixing his car engine is fundraising for a prosthetic limb. Stephen Rae, 40, lost his limb on 25 May this year, after battling sepsis when he grazed three knuckles as he worked beneath the bonnet of his car in April 2017. Tasks such as dressing himself have become impossible and Stephen said he feels infantilised by the disability – but is still able to play Call of Duty with one hand and says it keeps him going. He has launched a fundraiser and hopes to raise £35,000 to buy a high-quality prosthetic with motor skills in the fingers, and so far, £1,415 has been raised. Dad-of-five Stephen, from Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, described his infection as a ‘one in 1,000 chance’. He said: ‘They don’t know how I managed to walk into A&E with infection levels that high. ‘I was given the choice of having my right arm removed above the elbow. ‘If I went into hospital and didn’t come back, it … [Read more...] about Dad, 40, who cut himself on car engine has arm amputated after five-year sepsis fight
M4 brought to ‘standstill’ by fuel protesters targeting rush hour traffic
Police have warned of ‘serious disruption throughout the day’ in Britain – as protesters target motorways in protest over high fuel prices. Rolling roadblocks have brought parts of the M4 to a standstill. People in queues of traffic have even been filmed playing football on an empty carriageway. Campaigners have so far focused on a stretch of motorway between Bristol and South Wales, including the Prince of Wales Severn bridge crossing. This morning, a convoy of 20 vehicles set off from the Magor services on the M4, near Caldicot in South Wales. Drivers taking part in the protest plan to slow to 30mph in lanes one and two of affected roads. Others told officers they planned to meet ‘in the middle’ and block the motorway. Mobile welder Richard Dite, 44, told reporters it is costing him over £300 in fuel to get to work every week due to price hikes. He added: ‘My only option soon will be to put the welding gear in the shed and call it a day, maybe go on the … [Read more...] about M4 brought to ‘standstill’ by fuel protesters targeting rush hour traffic

Pound faces ‘existential crisis’, Bank of America warns
T he pound is facing an “existential crisis” and is likely to weaken further during this year, one of Wall Street’s top banks has warned. Bank of America says sterling “finds itself in an increasingly invidious position” for reasons including “increasingly challenging” Bank of England communication. Kamal Sharma, a London-based foreign exchange strategist for the lender, said the outlook for the pound was “grim”. The warnings came as the price of oil breached $120 (£95) a barrel on Monday, hitting a two-month high amid tightness in the market and concern over supplies. Oil prices have risen amid tight supply driven by the fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as increased demand as more economies return from Covid-related restrictions. China announced easing of its restrictions, while the European Union worked on a plan to ban imports of Russian crude. The pound has fallen about 6.6pc this year in dollar terms, leaving it as one of the worst performers among the … [Read more...] about Pound faces ‘existential crisis’, Bank of America warns
