Before Hollyoaks, there was Brookside - a gritty Channel 4 soap set in Liverpool that tackled the kind of ground-breaking stories you wouldn't find on the cobbles. From the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss to a harrowing domestic abuse storyline that ended in murder, the series by Grange Hill boss, Phil Redmond, didn't shy away from breaking television taboos. It ran for a 21 years from 1982 to 2003, drawing in nine million viewers at the height of its popularity - a record for Channel 4. But what happened to the stars of the show whose on-screen antics kept viewers gripped for more than two decades? Anna Friel - Beth Jordache Beth was involved in two of Brookside's biggest plots during the early 1990s. The Jordache family made up of mum, Mandy, and daughters, Beth and Rachel, moved into the Close in 1993 and it soon emerged that Mandy had been abused by her husband, Trevor, for years. Not only that, but the violent father had also been sexually abusing his eldest … [Read more...] about Brookside cast now… Coronation Street axing, near-fatal illness and Hollywood stardom

Pope Francis arrives in Iraq amid security fears
Pope Francis arrived in Baghdad on Friday for a historic visit amid concerns over security and the spread of the coronavirus. "This is an emblematic trip and it is a duty towards a land that has been martyred for so many years," Francis told reporters. "I am happy to be making trips again." The pontiff's trip to Iraq is his first outside of Italy since November 2019. Pope Francis' visit to Iraq's biblical sites Banished from paradise In biblical times, paradise was where Adam and Eve lived, supposedly the area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers — until God banished them from the Garden of Eden because they nibbled on the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. There are still lush oases on the banks of the river, but people's lives there today are anything but paradisiacal. Pope Francis' visit to Iraq's biblical sites River baptism John the Baptist baptized people, including Jesus of Nazareth, in the waters of the Jordan … [Read more...] about Pope Francis arrives in Iraq amid security fears
Corrie’s spring spoilers: Tyrone’s affair, Ronnie’s secret exposed and Carla ‘wedding’
Coronation Street has unveiled teasers for its spring storylines this year, including the arrival of drug lord Harvey, played by Will Mellor. Harvey will drag Leanne Battersby into his drugs ring as she attempts to free her son Simon from his clutches and repay him, in harrowing scenes as the grieving mum is taken advantage of. Soap boss Iain MacLeod said the storyline "starts quite small" but turns into a |colossal, thriller-ish, high-octane piece, which "forces Leanne to put her war paint on and go out in defence of her remaining son." Tyrone Dobbs is also set to have a steamy affair with Alina Pop, who moved in with him and girlfriend Fiz Stape, before he realised he had feelings for her. The younger and beautiful Alina burst in on Tyrone wearing just a towel, and Tyrone appears to be suffering from a midlife crisis as he is consumed with thoughts of Alina when a health scare forces him to spend more time at home, with her. But Fiz is totally unaware and will try to … [Read more...] about Corrie’s spring spoilers: Tyrone’s affair, Ronnie’s secret exposed and Carla ‘wedding’
Meghan & Harry have wrecked relationship with royal family and will never be able to repair it
THAT sound you can hear is the crackle and pop of royal bridges burning. Meghan and Harry have wrecked their relationship with his family and I honestly don’t see how they will ever be able to repair the damage unleashed by this weekend’s bombshell Oprah interview. All families have fights but this is turning into World War Three. Meghan is seen accusing The Firm of “perpetuating falsehoods”, which is posh-speak for telling lies. I’m not sure what untruths Meghan is specifically referring to because, remember, this interview was filmed well before accusations about her “bullying” royal staff came to light this week. It has to be said that bullying is a very strong word to use and a serious accusation against Meghan. I happen to think it could all be down to her lack of understanding of Royal protocols and their inability to cope with an energetic American actress from a completely different walk of life. And I reckon they should have cut her some slack … [Read more...] about Meghan & Harry have wrecked relationship with royal family and will never be able to repair it
