Where are local elections 2019
Nigel Farage’s insurgent Brexit Party has swept to victory in the north west and much of Greater Manchester, while the Lib Dems saw a renaissance - but Tommy Robinson lost his deposit. The former UKIP leader’s new anti-EU party will send three MEPs to Brussels in the wake of the 2019 European elections from a standing start, including the highly controversial Claire Fox, who had been heavily criticised for failing to condemn the IRA’s 1993 Warrington bombing. SEE FULL RESULTS BELOW While the six-week-old Brexit Party polled a third of the vote, the Lib Dems also saw a significant bounce of 11 per cent, winning two new seats, while the Greens took a north west seat for the first time. As a result Labour and the Tories were squeezed hard on both sides, losing roughly 12 per cent of their vote share each. The Tories lost both their seats, Labour lost one and UKIP vanished from the map. Voters in North West were never supposed to vote in the 2019 European elections - because the UK was supposed to leave the EU on 29 March 2019. But that deadline passed without Parliament agreeing on a deal, and Brexit was delayed until 31 October 2019. So, on Thursday, Scousers trooped to the polls to cast their vote. Meanwhile, Labour is braced for a bad night, with shadow Chancellor John McDonnell warning that the party would get "a good kicking" from Remain voters defecting to the anti-Brexit Lib Dems and Greens. Similar electoral upsets are expected across Europe. Now that everyone has cast their vote, we're expecting the results this evening and we'll update you as we get the news. Polling stations will open for the second time this month on Thursday May 23 as the country goes to the ballot box to vote in the European elections. The public will decide who they want to represent them as MEPs in the European Parliament. Originally, these elections would not have been our concern, but due to the lengthly delay on Brexit, and now an extension until the end of October, we’ll now have a say in the EU parliamentary polls in voting for which party and its candidates we’d like to represent us. If you are on the electoral register you will have already received a poll card telling you where you should vote. How do I vote? The 2019 European elections in the United Kingdom will take place on Thursday 23 May . Citizens of the UK and other EU member states resident in this country and aged over 18 can vote, provided they were registered to do so by 7 May . There are three different ways to vote: In person at a local polling station based on your home address By … [Read more...] about Polling station opening hours for EU elections 2019
Blanca San Segundo, 29, is number eight on the list for the centre-right party Ciudadanos in Godella (Valencia province) and stresses that 'people with mental disability are not ill' and in fact 'tend to have more empathy', which she says is 'necessary' in politics. “You need to be able to put yourself in other people's shoes,” says the special education worker. “People confuse mental disability with mental illness, and it's not the same.” Blanca is just about to graduate from Valencia University with a degree in Occupational Therapy, and has not needed extra learning support or an adapted curriculum to do so. She says she has 'never been given any special concessions' in any area of life and has achieved everything she has 'through effort and consistency', which are values she believes should be present in any level of government. “For a disabled person to be able to defend his or her ideas and for these ideas to reach local politics is important,” … [Read more...] about Four candidates with Down Syndrome stand for local elections
