More than 115,000 Royal Mail staff have voted in favour of a national strike in what could be the first in a wave of public sector walk outs in the coming months as essential workers continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis. In a ballot announced today, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) – which represents Royal Mail Group workers – voted by 97.6%, on a 77% turnout, to take industrial action. The union is demanding that Royal Mail group enters into negotiations to secure 'a straight, no-strings pay increase for workers.' The Royal Mail said it was 'disappointed' by the strike announcement after offering workers a 5.5% salary boost. It comes as the Government geared up for a hot summer and autumn fight with trade unions today as it offered two million public sector workers including doctors and nurses below-inflation pay rises. More than a million NHS staff including nurses, midwives and paramedics have been offered increased that will see the worst-paid … [Read more...] about More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers vote for strike action in row over pay

Boris Johnson moaned his £145k job was like being ‘imprisoned in a steel condom’
Boris Johnson moaned his £145k-a-year job as Foreign Secretary was like being 'imprisoned in a steel condom’, it has emerged. The future PM suggested he couldn’t say anything controversial while representing Britain overseas, Former Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson said. She added the comment seemed “odd” to her, because she hadn’t asked him what he thought or raised the subject of condoms at all. He also landed himself in hot water as Foreign Secretary regardless - making incorrect claims about British-Iranian prisoner Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe that her husband said "enabled a propaganda campaign" against her. Boris Johnson was forced to give up his £250k-a-year weekly column for the Daily Telegraph when he became Foreign Secretary. He was then rehired on £275k without consulting the post-government jobs watchdog. Mr Johnson became foreign secretary in 2016 and resigned in 2018 over Theresa May's Brexit plans. Cardiff-born Reyaad Khan, 21, and Ruhul Amin, from Aberdeen, died last month in Raqqa, alongside another fighter, in the first targeted UK drone attack on a British citizen, Mr Cameron told MPs. Khan - the target - had been plotting "barbaric" attacks on UK soil, he said. The "act of self defence" was lawful, despite MPs previously ruling out UK military action in Syria, the PM said. Khan was killed in a precision strike on 21 August by a remotely piloted aircraft, "after meticulous planning", while he was travelling in a vehicle. How Russia-Ukraine peace talks would go, according to Zelensky’s adviser
An advisor to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has said he doubts Russia would negotiate an end to Vladimir Putin 's invasion in good faith. In an interview with the BBC's Ukrainian service , Mykhailo Podolyak said that Moscow would use talks as an operational pause so it could make up for its shortfall in munitions and technology due to sanctions and then adjust its military strategy. "Russia is so intellectually predictable," that it would be "obvious" how any negotiations would play out, according to Podolyak. He believes that Russia would seek to start talks with a promise to temporarily stop shelling areas it is trying to seize. Moscow would then portray the administrations in place in the already captured territories as de facto Russian, and so should be recognized as "lost," a position Ukraine would refuse to accept. "Then a banal story would take place," he said, according to a translation. This would involve a ceasefire being followed by a Ukrainian … [Read more...] about How Russia-Ukraine peace talks would go, according to Zelensky’s adviser
