Boris Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the European Union on October 31, "do or die." And as the deadline creeps closer, it is becoming increasingly clear he's prepared to crash the UK out of Europe without a deal. It is the issue that will dominate his time in Downing Street. But we know remarkably little about the detail of Boris Johnson's Brexit plans. He's said much about Britain needing the ambition of the Moon landings and the spirit that made us a world power. So what about the details? Is he prepared to compromise? And will we really crash out with No Deal? As he is confirmed as our next Prime Minister, here's what you need to know about Boris Johnson's plans for Brexit. What is Boris Johnson's Brexit plan? Boris Johnson's bottom line is that we leave the EU on October 31, "do or die" - with or without a deal. He has said he would prefer Brexit to include a deal agreed with the EU. But for his deal, Johnson has demanded the EU re-opens the 'Withdrawal Agreement', the … [Read more...] about What is Boris Johnson’s Brexit plan – and will we leave the EU on October 31?

Boris Johnson has boldly claimed he has an "obvious solution" to Brexit that is "perfectly realistic". The frontrunner for Prime Minister today insisted he will succeed in three months where Theresa May failed in years of negotiation with the EU. He said he would renegotiate the 585-page Brexit Withdrawal Agreement with the EU - to change arrangements for the Irish border. Despite the mammoth scale of the battle, and the EU refusing to reopen the WA, he claimed he would make Brexit happen on time. "We have to get out by October 31," deal or no deal, Mr Johnson declared. Yet he also raised doubts over whether he'll keep his word. Tellingly, he said it would be the wrong move "at this stage" to signal he will delay Brexit beyond October 31. And he refused to promise he'll resign if he does delay Brexit past Halloween . Mr Johnson made the comments in an interview with the BBC's The World at One - his first in the campaign. He said he would push to renegotiate the controversial … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson claims he has ‘obvious solution’ to Brexit that’s ‘perfectly realistic’
Boris Johnson today made a flurry of promises on the steps of 10 Downing Street in his first speech as the UK's Prime Minister. The Tory leader's breathless, breezy rattling-off of policies couldn't be more different to Theresa May's sombre speech on "burning injustices" three years later. He pledged to "unite our country" (despite threatening a No Deal Brexit ) and proclaimed: "The British people have had enough of waiting. "The time has come to act." Yet his announcements happened so quickly and with so little detail that you'd be forgiven for not knowing the facts behind him. So here's what Boris Johnson announced - and what the pledges actually mean. 1. Recruit 20,000 police 'forthwith' (but doesn't say when) WHAT HE SAID: "My job is to make your streets safer. I'm going to begin with another 20,000 police on the streets - and we start recruiting forthwith." THE FACTS: Boris Johnson made this pledge during the leadership campaign, claiming it would cost £1.1bn a year. But he … [Read more...] about All Boris Johnson’s pledges in his first speech as Prime Minister – fact-checked
Boris Johnson was blocked on his journey to Buckingham Palace by climate change protesters. Police were forced to break up a human chain of people standing across the Mall, the road that leads to the palace. Mr Johnson's motorcade was travelling to the Palace to meet the Queen and officially take the office of Prime Minister. Protesters wearing red t-shirts linked arms and stood in the way of Mr Johnson's jaguar and police outriders. Other protesters carried a large red banner which read "Climate Emergency." Motorbike officers dismounted to break up the protest. The motorcade was stopped on the Mall for less than a minute while the protest was broken up. Mr Johnson then made his way to the palace for his first audience with the monarch. Greenpeace claimed credit for the protest, tweeting: "We just tried to hand the incoming PM a crucial letter - it contains the answers to tackling the Climate Emergency. "But will he *act*?" John Sauven, Executive Director of Greenpeace UK, said: … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson blocked on journey to Buckingham Palace by climate protest
A former backer of the death penalty who was forced out over off-the-books meetings was tonight named the Home Secretary of the UK. Shamed Tory ex minister Priti Patel was handed the plum job in Boris Johnson's top team after a brutal reshuffle that saw 17 of the 30 ministers who attend Cabinet resign or be sacked. Theresa May forced Ms Patel to quit as International Development Secretary in 2017 after she had 'off-the-books' meetings with senior Israeli officials during a 'family holiday'. But Mr Johnson trumpeted her return to the Cabinet as part of a record number of ethnic minority politicians in the team. It was part of a seizure of top jobs by right-wingers, with Dominic Raab being named Foreign Secretary and Sajid Javid taking the role of Chancellor. See the full list of changes in the Cabinet reshuffle here. The 47-year-old MP for Witham, Essex, is a hard-right Tory who backs tax cuts and supported the death penalty until 2016. She's also a Brexiteer 'ultra' who voted … [Read more...] about Priti Patel named Home Secretary in huge promotion for shamed hard-right Tory
