John Bartlett, who has died aged 94, was the civil engineer responsible for building the Victoria line in London and for designing the British side of the Channel Tunnel. He was also the inventor, in 1964, of the Bentonite Tunnelling Machine (BTM), a device which allowed the excavation of tunnels in loose soils that would previously have been difficult and costly (or even impossible) to dig, and developments of the concept enabled a rapid increase in tunnel construction around the world. Before the BTM, tunnelling in soft soil involved the creation of a sealed box pressurised with air, from which workers would dig the tunnel, with the tunnel face needing continuous support. It was dangerous work, not only because there was a constant risk of groundwater flooding the works causing instability, but also because workers in such conditions often suffered health problems such as “the bends” and bone necrosis. It is no accident that most of the London Underground network was developed … [Read more...] about John Bartlett, Bentonite Tunnelling Machine inventor whose work included the Victoria Line and the Dartford tunnels – obituary

Single mum needs two skin grafts after birthmark becomes cancerous
Technical saleswoman Kristina Findalen was holidaying in Italy with her children and dad when she noticed some changes to her birthmark. The 37-year-old, from Copenhagen, had an innocuous birthmark on her right palm which began growing in size, itching and losing its colour. After the trip, it took about three months until Kristina was referred to a dermatologist who immediately sent her to the cancer ward. They took the biopsy and ran tests and Kristina got an answer ten days later – she had developed stage one melanoma, a common type of skin cancer, in her birthmark Fortunately, the disease had been caught in the early stages and could be treated. Kristina’s life had already been turned upside down 18 months prior when she and her husband of 17 years split. Five months later he died by suicide, devastating her and their two children. The single mother-of-two was advised that surgery to remove the cancer would be the most successful route. She was told that a … [Read more...] about Single mum needs two skin grafts after birthmark becomes cancerous
Khloe Kardashian issues brutal response to fans’ claims she got ’12 face transplants’ and plastic surgery makeover
KHLOE Kardashian has addressed fan rumors that she received numerous "face transplants," resulting in her seemingly altered appearance. The reality star doesn't understand the scrutiny surrounding her supposed changing facial features. Khloe spoke out about the ongoing speculation she had a plastic surgery makeover during Tuesday's episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. “It did used to bother me when people were, like, I’ve had 12 face transplants. I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, I have?’ I was like, ‘That’s crazy,'” she told host Amanda Hirsch. She expressed her confusion over the rumors insisting she only had "one nose job" despite claims she had more work done. "Like it didn't bother me, it offended me... I couldn't figure out why people thought that. Like, I had one nose job that I love. Like, I want everyone to know. And I love it, I don't care to lie about it, nothing, but the transplant thing, I just want to understand why. I don't know." Khloe … [Read more...] about Khloe Kardashian issues brutal response to fans’ claims she got ’12 face transplants’ and plastic surgery makeover
Girl, 4, needed 60 stitches and could be scarred for life after dog attack
A little girl may be scarred for life after her face was mauled by a dog. Harley Chatterton, four, needed 60 stitches after being attacked by a one-year-old Jackador in Glasgow. She was in a family friend’s communal garden when she was heard screaming in pain on the afternoon of May 14th. Multiple women rushed to pull the dog off of her. But by then Harley had sustained 13 injuries on her face, including deep lacerations on her nose, mouth and lip. Doctors told her parents Caprice and Stephen that their daughter may be left with permanent scarring. Mum-of-three Caprice Finlay told the Daily Record: ‘Only time will tell if the scars will disappear. The surgeon gave us scarring cream, but said they could be there forever.’ Harley’s gran Janet Finlay witnessed the dog pounce on her granddaughter from a nearby balcony and quickly ran to free her from its grip. Caprice, 24, said she feared the worst when she arrived shortly after the incident and saw her mum … [Read more...] about Girl, 4, needed 60 stitches and could be scarred for life after dog attack

Do the hairs on my neck tingle as I enter the Elizabeth line? They certainly do
Five full years have passed since I moved back to nowheresville in Essex , lured in significant part by the promise of an imminent glam new ride to the office. So it is hard to pretend that there is not a touch of frustration to go with the excitement that here I am, about to take that glam new ride for the first time in the Year of Our Lord 2022. It’s also hard to ignore, as I circumnavigate the carnival dancers at Woolwich station , around whom a queue for the brand new train has formed – consisting entirely of people who haven’t worked out there is not actually a queue but rather just a crowd of people watching the dancers – that I am taking this glam new ride neither from home nor to work. I live in Gidea Park, where the “cross” part of crossrail – ie the bit that goes straight across central London – does not connect until the autumn. I also work in Westminster, from where I will, one day, change from Elizabeth line to Jubilee, but Bond Street station is … [Read more...] about Do the hairs on my neck tingle as I enter the Elizabeth line? Man who had world’s first pig heart transplant dies
David Bennett, the man who received a pig heart transplant in a groundbreaking surgery earlier this year, has died at the age of 57, two months after his operation. His cause of death and whether the pig organ was involved remains unknown. Mr Bennett was gravely ill and only received the pig heart as a last resort because he had terminal heart disease, an irregular heartbeat and was ineligible for a human organ. His doctors in Maryland, US, had offered the grandfather-of-five one last glimmer of hope to prolong his life: a replacement heart from a genetically modified pig. News of his operation made headlines around the world, with Mr Bennett saying it was “do or die'' and that he accepted it was a “shot in the dark”. The operation was initially a success. The genetically modified heart, which had been designed to be small enough for a human and not to be rejected, was functioning well. Surgeon Dr Bartley Griffith received special permission from the US Food and Drug … [Read more...] about Man who had world’s first pig heart transplant dies
