Buffeted by rising consumer taste for fresh ingredients, competition from upstarts and a tricky retail environment, 150-year-old Campbell Soup now finds itself having to rethink the business of soup. It is a similar tale at Kraft, whose once-popular yellow and white cheese singles are no longer ubiquitous. And at Kellogg, which has seen demand for cereal go soft. As the travails of these and other companies show, iconic brands that dominated 20th century American supermarkets are having a much tougher time in the Amazon-Whole Foods era. Kraft Heinz last month announced a steep annual loss following a $15.4 billion asset impairment, partly from writing down the value of the Oscar Mayer and Kraft trademarks. It was a meteoric rise. He made his first stock deal at age 13 at the Sparkasse bank in the small town of Unna, near Dortmund. At age 17, he bought his first stake in a company, located in Frankfurt. He had his first Ferrari when he was 26 and bought a second a year later in China. On his wrist, he wore a Hublot Big Bang. But then, it all came crashing down -- and at age 30, he found himself in a prison in Shenzhen, sharing a cell with 15 other prisoners. A hole in the floor served as the toilet. Rotting away in the cell in summer 2013, Robert Rother saw no way out. Except for one: The plastic cup they had given him. On Feb 7, a woman in Essex posted a picture of her living room on Instagram. It got 80,000 likes. This says something about the room, which is a sterile, silvery vision of almost supernatural cleanliness and tidiness. It also says something about one of Instagram’s fastest-growing and most surprising trends: cleaning. The author of the living room photo, 28-year-old Sophie Hinchliffe, is one of the behemoths of this trend. Hinchliffe, better known as Mrs Hinch, has acquired in the region of 1.8 million followers since she began sharing cleaning tips. Her fans, the “Hinch Army”, refer to cleaning as “Hinching” and call purchases of cleaning products a “Hinch haul”.
