Sir Cliff Richard has been left distraught by the death of his “soulmate” Olivia Newton-John. The singer’s friend, DJ Mike Read, said yesterday he had been in contact with the pop star after the news broke she had passed away, aged 73. Mike said: “I got an email from Cliff last night and he’s devastated.” Cliff and Olivia share one of the closest friendships in showbusiness spanning more than half a century. He helped launch her career in the 1970s, and Cliff once admitted that he was even in love with her. A pal said: “Olivia counted Cliff as one of her closest friends. He was always there for her, no matter what. It’s little wonder it’s hit him so hard. They were soulmates.” Olivia Newton-John and Sir Cliff Richard in 1995 ( Image: REX/Shutterstock) Sir Cliff has yet to comment publicly on the death of his friend, who he met in 1971 when he was hosting his own TV variety show, and she was invited to become a regular guest singer. How to get into football for fitness and fun from the women in the sport
With the Lionesses scoring freely through Euro 2022, it’s the driving force needed to get more women and girls involved in football in the UK. Sadly, females represent just 2% of people playing the sport, according to Jim Law of the Findaplayer website, which helps locate local teams and events. Reassuringly though, that number is expected to rise dramatically this year, with more than 6,500 active female-only or mixed games across the nation. Whether it’s on a competitive or social level, there are so many reasons to give football a go. Euro 2022 tournament sponsor Visa commissioned a report into women’s football, Women Thriving On And Off The Pitch, which showed that: Three quarters of those who play team sport say it has had a positive impact on their business life. Half of those who play a team sport say it helps them deal with stress, tiredness or being overworked. Visa ambassador Karen Carney MBE, who has 144 caps for England, says: ‘The biggest eye-opener … [Read more...] about How to get into football for fitness and fun from the women in the sport

Fast or feast: Is the 5:2 diet all it’s cracked up to be?
Eating normally for five days a week and taking in just 500 calories (600 for a man) for the other two sounds like the perfect diet. But a number of health experts say it’s just a fad. The 5:2 diet is a form of intermittent fasting and claims to promote weight loss and other health benefits, including giving your digestive system a break and reducing the growth hormone that leads to ageing. However, former professional athlete Richard Phillipps, founder of Embody Fitness (www.embodyfitness.co.uk), says 5:2 is just another excuse for poor nutritional habits. ‘Although there’s some evidence to show that 5:2 can help you to lose weight in the short term,’ he says, ‘a diet such as this isn’t sustainable in the long term and might have serious health implications further down the line.’ ‘More importantly, though, is not considering the long-term health implications of consistently eating the wrong foods on your normal days,’ he adds. ‘Being allowed to regularly consume … [Read more...] about Fast or feast: Is the 5:2 diet all it’s cracked up to be?
Serena Williams hints at retirement, says she’s “evolving away from tennis”
Serena Williams appears to be getting ready to step off of professional tennis courts for good. The legendary athlete, who's won countless titles — including 23 Grand Slams — over a playing career that has spanned nearly three decades, suggested that she intends to retire after the upcoming U.S. Open in a Vogue essay published on Tuesday. Williams, 40, is currently playing in the Canadian Open, where she claimed her first singles victory in slightly more than a year earlier this week, and where she'll return to play another match on Wednesday. While continuing to face the world's top athletes in tournaments like Wimbledon and last year's French Open, Williams has also increasingly turned her attention to projects outside of tennis in recent years. In her new essay, she said that "evolving away from tennis" would give her an opportunity to prioritize other things. "I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn't feel like a modern word to me. I've been thinking of this as a … [Read more...] about Serena Williams hints at retirement, says she’s “evolving away from tennis”

He says: “If your pet is acting funny or is under the weather, or you want to know about nutrition or exercise, just ask. I can help keep pets happy and healthy.” Q) I HAVE an 18-year-old Burmese cat called Bella who has third- stage kidney disease but is not on medication. For the past couple of months she has started being very verbal throughout the night. Is she in pain? Do I need to consider having her put to sleep? I would hate to be keeping her here for selfish reasons if she is suffering. But I feel if I take her to the vet they will suggest putting her to sleep as they said last year she only had months left and not years.
