On 31 October, 2008, in the midst of one of the worst financial crises the world had ever seen, a person – or group – by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto published a paper that claimed to offer an alternative to the traditional banking system. The paper, titled 'Bitcoin: A Peer-toPeer Electronic Cash System', was posted to an obscure mailing list viewed by a handful of so-called 'cypherpunks' who believed cryptography and computer science could provide a meaningful route to social, economic and political change. Just over two months later, on 3 January, 2009, the first ever cryptocurrency was officially launched in the form of the bitcoin network. Within a few years, it would be worth more than $10 billion and would eventually peak above $300 billion – surpassing the market cap of the payments giant Visa. Yet despite this success, bitcoin and the thousands of cryptocurrencies that have since appeared are still largely a fringe … [Read more...] about Bitcoin is now 10 years old. On Oct. 13 newspapers in Saudi Arabia released a pointed reminder to the citizens of the kingdom: Article 6 of the Anti-Cyber Crime Law stipulates a maximum five years in prison and a maximum fine of 3 million riyals ($800,000) for sharing rumors or fake news that breach public order, religious values, public morals, and privacy. Everyone knew what it was directed at—speculation about the involvement of the government in the Oct. 2 disappearance and alleged murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a U.S.-based journalist and prominent critic of the regime’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. At first, the Saudi narrative had been simply to depict the case as an attempt to smear the country because of its power in the Middle East—even as Turkish officials claimed it was Saudi Arabia that ordered the killing. In the kingdom, government-controlled media and official comments stuck to the line Prince Mohammed made in an interview with Bloomberg News a day after Khashoggi … [Read more...] about What Damage Control Looks Like in Saudi Arabia

Ayoze Perez admits he is “proud” that his exquisite lob against Leicester City has been compared with Philippe Albert’s iconic chip. Albert’s goal capped off Newcastle United’s famous 5-0 victory over Manchester United in October 1996, which left Peter Schmeichel embarrassed, is arguably the most iconic strike in the Magpies’ history. It summed up the attacking, free-flowing style of Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ side, given that a centre-back was able to score such a spectacular goal. But earlier this month, Perez netted a lob of his own during the 2-1 victory at Leicester - and the Spaniard chipped Kasper Schmeichel, the son of Man United legend Peter, in the process. Given that Perez’s strike at the King Power Stadium virtually guaranteed United’s top-flight status, and due to the fact he chipped Schmeichel Jnr too, that goal also looks set to take a special place in Newcastle’s history - even if it will never … [Read more...] about Perez: ‘Maybe fans will talk about my Leicester lob in 20 years’
