Pregnant women with diabetes are up to five times more likely to lose their baby, say scientists. Both forms of the disease, known as type 2 and type 1, can trigger complications leading to infant mortality, either in the womb or shortly after birth. They also raise the risk of requiring an emergency Caesarian section, according to new research. The 15 year study of almost 813,883 Scottish deliveries identified 104 deaths around the time of birth in children of mothers with diabetes – 65 and 39 among type 1 and type 2 patients, respectively. These rates are 4.2 and 3.1 times higher, respectively, than in the general Scottish population. Stillbirths were four times (T1D) and five times (T2D) higher. The problem could be partly due to diabetic mothers being more likely to have larger babies, increasing the strain of pregnancy for mother and child. Lead author Dr Sharon Mackin, of the University of Glasgow, said: “There were marked differences in pregnancy … [Read more...] about Diabetes warning for pregnant women

Type 2 diabetes can be completely reversed by a weight loss programme without any medication, a study has found. The landmark trial of UK adults published in the Lancet showed that 46% of patients on the strict calorie counting programme who lost an average of 10kg were ‘cured’ a year later. That compared to only 4% of a second group which followed the current best practice treatment of GPs’ lifestyle advice and drugs to reduce blood sugar levels. Scientists are hailing the programme of strict calorie control combined with counselling and then gradual increases in exercise as a possible template to reverse diabetes. Almost nine out of 10 participants who lost more than 15kg on programme put their condition into remission. There are 3.6 million people diagnosed with the condition in the UK and a further one million who do not know they have it. The findings suggest, if rolled out nationally, at lest 1.5 million Brits could reverse their diabetes within a year. The NHS … [Read more...] about Type 2 diabetes can be REVERSED by strict weight loss programme without medication, study finds
A CALIFORNIAN woman is suing make-up giant Sephora claiming one of their lipsticks gave her herpes. The woman said she visited a store in October 2015 and tried out one of the tester lipsticks on display. But a short time later she ended up with a cold sore on her lip despite never having a cold sore before, reports TMZ.Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which can trigger painful blister-like sores on the lips and on the genitals. It is highly contagious and spread by skin-to-skin contact - during vaginal, oral or anal sex - or even just a kiss.As it can be passed on through sexual contact it is classified as a sexually transmitted infection. The woman claims doctors diagnosed her with herpes and believes Sephora failed to warn her, and other customers, of the risks of sharing lipstick samples. She is suing for the emotional distress of an "incurable lifelong affliction".So, can you really get herpes from a lipstick? The short answer is yes, but it is extremely … [Read more...] about A Californian woman is suing make-up giant Sephora claiming a LIPSTICK gave her herpes – so can you really catch the virus from cosmetics?
WHETHER it's reading a book, binge-watching films or seeing just how many of those little bottles of wine you can put away, everyone has their own way of passing the time on a long flight. But what about the pilots? We uncover what they get up to behind the cockpit door...You might like you to think that pilots always have their steady hands at the wheel. But in reality, airmen and women normally flick on autopilot within SECONDS of taking off.In normal circumstances, modern computer tech on passenger planes allows for next to no human intervention apart from during take off and landing. While this fact might panic some, frequent flyers need not get too jittery.Because pilots are constantly monitoring for turbulence and other safety and comfort factors during cruising.Other duties include monitoring the weather radar to gauge conditions up ahead, filling in paperwork, communicating via the radio with air traffic controllers and altering altitudes and flight paths as instructed. So while … [Read more...] about What your pilot is REALLY up to at 40,000 feet – the strict rules of what they can and can’t do in the cockpit
WAR, what is it good for? In Gears, absolutely everything. The fourth instalment of this acclaimed shooter is simply bad ass. It’s fun, fast and brutally glorious. In fact, it’s probably one of my favourite games of the year. The campaign is excellent, if not a little short at around six or so hours long if you burst through it. I wanted more. The story revolves around JD Fenix — the son of the great Marcus — and his pals Del and Kait. The human race is, as always, in danger from a new threat, following on from the Locust’s demise. The Swarm are our baddies, as are the robotic “DeeBees”, the creations of the COG who run planet Sera through martial law.Our heroes are part of an outsider group who refuse to play by the rules, resulting in some, let’s say, disagreements?I loved the narrative of GoW 4, and everything about the campaign, even though it starts a little slow.I’m not going to ruin anything for you, you’ve all seen the … [Read more...] about War, what is it good for? THE G-spot was unleashed upon the world more than three decades ago, when Beverly Whipple announced on US television that by pressing a particular spot in the vagina, women would get orgasms.Since then we’ve hunted for the G-spot in bedrooms and laboratories. But enough of us came up empty-handed that it raised the question: Does the G-spot exist? To find out, the Science Vs podcast visited Beverly Whipple, now a professor of nursing at Rutgers University, at her home in New Jersey.Beverly told us that she found this magical spot while studying women who thought they were peeing during orgasms. To study the women, her team inserted their fingers into patient’s vaginas to feel around for sensitive areas.“You go all around the vaginal wall,” she said, from 12 o’clock, to 3 o’clock, to 6 o’clock and so on, "saying, 'How does this feel? How does this feel?’“Between 11 and 1 o’clock, at the front wall of the vagina, we got a lot … [Read more...] about Everything you thought you knew about the G-spot is probably wrong and here’s why
MEMPHIS DEPAY will have to take a pay cut of over £1million if he stays at Manchester United next season. The Holland international’s wage is £5.2m from July 2015 to June 2016 — but his pay will then be slashed to 3.9m-a-year. But it is not all bad news for Depay — who cost United £25m last summer— as the amount of bonus payments could bump him up above his current wage. United kept up their charge to finish in the top four yesterday when they defeated Everton 1-0 through an Anthony Martial goal. And if they do make it into the Champions League, Depay’s wage will increase by £1.3m every season they are in the competition. There will be a one-off payment of £500,000 if Depay is still at Old Trafford in September 2018.For every start, the former PSV star nets £20,000 and half that if he comes on as a substitute. And for every 20 appearances he makes a season for Louis van Gaal’s side, Depay’s bank account will be … [Read more...] about Memphis Depay’s Man United contract leaked showing Dutchman will take a £1million pay cut
DW: What is the focus of the Amnesty International report on human rights of this year? Polly Truscott: Our report this year focuses on problems experienced by people on the move across the world. Our research shows that to some extent the world is increasingly becoming dangerous for refuges and migrant workers also in the context of Asia-Pacific for internally displaced persons. What is clear to us is that the rights of millions, who have escaped conflicts and persecution or migrants seeking a better life elsewhere, are being abused. Governments aren't really showing interest in protecting their rights. Can you tell us a little bit more about the situation of migrants and internally displaced persons from Afghanistan? As I already mentioned, there are 2.7 million Afghan refugees outside the country. In fact Pakistan, for example, has just agreed that they do not be returned to Afghanistan yet, which is good news, given the very insecure situation that many would face on return. … [Read more...] about ‘The world is increasingly dangerous for refugees’
