Hundreds of jobs are expected to go at Nissan, trade deals worth billions could be axed, and experts are warning the North East will be the worst hit region. And, a No Deal Brexit is becoming a greater reality as the UK prepares to leave the European Union on March 29. When the UK leaves, forecasters are warning the North East's economy could shrink by 6.5% over the next 15 years - and up to 11% in the event of 'no-deal' exit. If there's no deal, 70 international trade deals will be gone , which includes Turkey where the North East exports food worth £480 million to each year, and Norway, which £180m of goods are exported to each year. Nissan announced it would be moving production of its X-Trail model to Japan, saying it was a business decision but also that the UK's unknown relationship with the EU was proving a hindrance. The UK and EU did reach a Brexit deal, but it was voted down in the House of Commons. THE threat of No Deal Brexit looms over Westminster as Theresa May struggles to get a deal through parliament with just weeks to go. But what does it mean if Britain leaves the European Union without a deal? Here's what you need to know. What is a No Deal Brexit? A No Deal departure from the European Union means leaving without formal arrangements for the future relationship or any transition period. Currently Britain's trade, customs and immigration rules are tied up with the single market and a host of EU regulatory bodies. Ministers are seeking a legal deal to replace these with looser arrangements so we are outside the single market and customs union but keeping close ties so cross-border trade is easy. Negotiations under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty led to the withdrawal agreement in November - but MPs rejected it in January. Britain's Brexit negotiators head to Brussels on February 20 with fresh plans to fix the hated Irish border backstop. Eurocrats have privately … [Read more...] about What is a No Deal Brexit, when could a deal with Brussels be agreed and what happens if Britain leaves the EU without a deal?
It would be easy to throw your hands up in the air in surrender to the tsunami of confusion that is Brexit. Really easy. The UK will leave the European Union on March 29, and with each day that passes, the potential of a no deal Brexit is becoming more likely. While a deal was agreed between the UK and the EU last month, MPs in the House of Commons are unlikely to pass it. PM Theresa May, facing two no confidence challenges, has been forced to delay a vote until at least January 14. In the meantime emergency plans are being put into action so the country doesn't completely fall apart. The government has triggered 106 "technical notices" outlining the practical impacts of a No Deal Brexit - from driving licences to cats. Officials are sending out thousands of letters to firms and have 3,500 troops "held at readiness" in the event they are needed. If there's no arrangement in time, we'll lose 70 international trade deals in a blink, shed access to EU criminal databases and likely have … [Read more...] about The 21 ways you could be affected if UK leaves EU with no deal
THERESA May's "soft" Brexit deal has sparked resignations and calls for her to quit from within her own party. Let’s take a closer look at what could happen in the coming weeks. What happens if Parliament approves May's deal? Mrs May’s deal will likely be voted on by MPs in December following the EU’s Brexit summit on November 25. If the deal is passed through Parliament, an EU withdrawal agreement bill will be introduced in early 2019. And if that bill is subsequently passed then the European Parliament will then vote on it. If the bill receives a majority of votes in Brussels it will then need to be approved by the European Council. On March 29, 2019, the UK will leave the EU and the transition phase will begin and last until December 2020. What happens if Parliament rejects the Brexit agreement? If MPs reject the deal, the Tory government has up to 21 days to put forward a new plan. Any new agreement would then need to be renegotiated with Brussels. There are a … [Read more...] about What happens if UK Parliament passes Theresa May’s draft Brexit deal?
