Many students go to college to climb the economic ladder and set themselves up for a successful adulthood. Earning a post-secondary credential can make the difference in securing a job that offers a long-term career and financial security. But this isn’t a guarantee. Sometimes, the weight of loans can set students back further, economically, from where they started . (This is especially true for the nearly 40 percent of students with loans who leave college with loan debt and no degree .) The typical student who borrows to attend college and does graduate carries nearly $25,000 in debt , according to an analysis by the Department of Education. The irony of attending college in the U.S. is that the burden of paying for it can prevent it from serving its purpose of launching young adults into stable, fulfilling lives. President Joe Biden’s promise to forgive up to $20,000 in student-loan debt for anyone who received a Pell Grant and $10,000 for those earning less than $125,000 … [Read more...] about How Student Debt Has Contributed to ‘Delayed’ Adulthood

FASHION brands may be becoming more size-inclusive but this can sometimes be lacking, especially when it comes to celebrity or influencer collaborations. With Boohoo recently launching their summer collection in collaboration with actress Megan Fox, fashionistas were quick to wonder just how inclusive this range will be, and if it lives up to the hype. One fashion youtuber, Andrea Buller , ordered a haul of the collection to test just how well these clothes would fit someone with a midsize body. The first item she tried on was the premium mirror-disc mini dress , which she purchased for $100. The dress is currently on sale in the UK with 15% off at £59.50. The dress only comes in a small, medium, or large, with Andrea purchasing the large. “Please keep in mind, this goes for $100,” quips Andrea, before showing that the dress can’t even get over bust. THE TERM 'golden ratio' is commonly used to reference things that most people consider to be beautiful. One social media user made a beauty filter specifically meant to follow the guidelines of the number. What is the 'golden ratio' hack on TikTok? TikTok and social media influencers are no strangers to the ever-popular beauty filter, which is designed to enhance users' appearances. Grace M Choi, a TikTok user with more than 62K followers , helps to create beauty filters using the app. One of her original filters has become increasingly popular to help individuals create a new eyebrow shape. Known as the 'golden ratio' hack, the filter features lines based on the golden ratio principle of symmetry. The filter indicates where the beginning and end of their eyebrows should fall and where their arch should be located. Choi created a TikTok explainer video, showing how the filter is supposed to work. "I created this filter to help you draw your perfect eyebrows … [Read more...] about What is the ‘golden ratio’ hack on TikTok?
By Mark Savage Published 4 September Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl choked back tears as he played the band's first show since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March. The star was singing Times Like These when he paused to collect his emotions on the lyric: "It's times like these you learn to love again." Earlier, Grohl described Hawkins as his "dear friend, bandmate and brother". He said of Hawkins "no-one else could make you smile or laugh or dance or sing like he could". "And for those of you that admired him from afar, I'm sure you've all felt the same thing," Grohl added. "So sing and dance and laugh and cry and scream and make some noise so he can hear us right now." Grohl was speaking as Foo Fighters topped the bill at an all-star concert in honour of Hawkins' life at London's Wembley Stadium. … [Read more...] about Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert: Foo Fighters give drummer a loving send-off
In Japan’s recent past, the task of preparing and serving tea frequently fell to female office workers, sometimes called ochakumi (“tea-pourers”). My mother remembers observing older tea-pourers in the 1970s teaching younger ones how to do it correctly, preparing the young women for how they would someday serve their husbands. Although there has been strong feminist pushback against this practice, gendered expectations about who serves drinks in the workplace have persisted . So perhaps it is significant that in Emi Yagi’s novel, Diary of a Void (translated by David Boyd and Lucy North), it is coffee-cleanup duty that causes Shibata, the office worker at the center of the story, to snap and tell her colleagues that she can’t wash the cups due to her morning sickness. Except that Shibata isn’t pregnant. It’s a lie. Consciously or unconsciously, she is pushing back not just against her office but against a long history of gender-based discrimination. In her previous job, she … [Read more...] about The Strange Audacity of Faking a Big Life Moment
