A council is considering selling off its 700-year-old copy of the Magna Carta for £20million. Faversham Town Council owns one of only seven copies of the 1300 edition of the historic document, signed and sealed by King Edward I. Council chiefs in the Kent town are in talks about what to do with their Magna Carta, including the possibility of selling it or loaning it out. During a meeting of the town council this week, councillors were told that it wouldn't be feasible to display Magna Carta in the town hall as it would cost too much money to police. Local resident Brian Pain said that as costs were 'too high' for the town council to display the document, it should look into selling it. He said: 'We can't display the Magna Carta as there isn't grant money to do it and the cost would be enormous. NEIL Woodford’s stricken equity fund is being wound up – leaving savers facing a “significant loss” as well as a long wait to get their money back. Assets in the fund will now be sold off and any proceeds raised will be returned to investors, starting with an interim payment in January. Mr Woodford has also been removed as investment manager of the fund, which will be renamed. Adrian Lowcock, head of personal investing at investment platform Willis Owen, explained: “Woodford will be removed as fund manager and the holdings in the fund will be sold. This means investors may have to wait until next year to firstly find out the value of their investment and then to get their money back. "Sadly many people will be looking at significant losses.” He added: “Although there were rumours this is truly shocking news. The Conservatives have pledged an extra £1bn per year for social care in England over the next five years, if they win the election.Writing in the Daily Mail, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the funding would "stabilise" the system and help councils meet rising demand.The government had already promised an extra £1bn next year, but this extends the pledge until 2024/25.Mr Hancock said "cross-party consensus" was needed on a long-term plan.He wrote that social care was "too important to be politicised," and parties should work on new proposals "as soon as possible" after the election.
