What do pack rats look like
Whoah, indeed. There’s nothing like seeing New York through a child’s eyes. From the cityscape of Spiderman to the spaghetti of yellow cabs, from Macy’s and massive portion sizes to screaming sirens and rats scurrying across subway tracks, the wonder and freshness makes even serial visitors feel like first-timers. Visiting New York with kids (we have two - Sam is 7), we went big on cinematic sights, with Brooklyn Bridge (right) top of the list. The wind cut like a barber’s blade, but we were ready — tucked up in hats, gloves and thermals. Walking from the Manhattan side in early evening, we were midway across by sunset and caught the full, night-time glory from Fulton Ferry Landing. Bring headphones and line up your favourite NY song for a shared listen during the walk. It’s a lifetime memory in the making. Forget Junior’s, the over-hyped diner nearby, and book a table for a piece of Italian-America within shouting distance of Times Square. … [Read more...] about New York with kids: Top 10 things to do for families in NYC
Plymouth is set to become a gleaming modern shopping destination with its city centre packed with new attractions, hotels and a £53million leisure complex. And it’s all going to come to fruition in the next few years. Sceptical? Well don’t be. Yes, there are projects which are still a bit of a mystery – The Civic Centre and Mayflower House, for example – and others which are still at a very early stage, such as the Good Companions site and Money Centre. But these projects are all either under way or confirmed. So this is what Plymouth has to look forward to for the 2020s. 0 Have your say Bonjour, ca va? That’s about as far as my schoolgirl French goes, but since I’ve been here in Cannes on the French Riviera I have been trying to brush up on what I learnt during GCSE French. As you can see, I’ve not remembered a huge amount but I’d like credit for at least trying. So here I am once again at the international TV festival called MIPTV.It’s been incredible, just like it was six months ago when I was last here, except for one major drawback... it’s not stopped raining, and I mean it hasn’t stopped. It’s such a shame because it’s a wonderful place to come for work but, apart from the landscape, I could honestly have been back in Blighty. To be fair, you’ve probably had nicer weather than me and I’m not exaggerating. The other night I woke up to the loud claps of thunder, lightning and torrential rain. During a very important meeting the other day in a beautiful restaurant off one of … [Read more...] about CHERYL GIBBS: My drowned rat look on French Riviera
LAST year Rat Boy released his debut album – now he’s working on the next record with one of his heroes. The Essex singer, real name Jordan Cardy, has been in Los Angeles with Tim Armstrong, frontman of punk greats Rancid. “It’s a little bit heavier at the moment, a little bit more intense sounding,” says Jordan of his new music. “The stuff with Tim will come out later this year and he has showed me so much. I’m really excited by it all. I went over to LA and we spent a week together, and we got so much written. We realised we needed to do more stuff as it had gone so well, so we did another two weeks and were making stuff every day. “It was sick. We’re both into punk and hip hop and I grew up listening to the Transplants (Armstrong’s other project), which is the sort of music I want to make.” He might show some of that music off at the Barrowland next Wednesday. The show, part of his biggest ever headline … [Read more...] about Rat Boy is staying true to his punk roots
