It's been 25 years since the bestselling novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone marked the beginning of a global phenomenon. Author J.K. Rowling conjured up her boy wizard and the world of Hogwarts while stuck on a train and fought to have her novel accepted by publishers before it became a billion pound franchise. It was rejected 12 times before Bloomsbury eventually released it to the world in 1997. Rowling went on to write a further six Harry Potter books which have since been translated into 80 languages. Each book also has its own film adaptation which launched the careers of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – and turned Rowling into a household name. Prince Charles had ‘very emotional’ first meeting with granddaughter Lilibet
Prince Charles had a ‘very emotional’ first meeting with his granddaughter Lili and a special reunion with grandson Archie during Harry and Meghan’s trip to the UK, a royal source has said. The heir to the throne and wife Camilla were ‘absolutely thrilled’ to see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their children when they travelled briefly from California for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier this month. Harry, who quit as a senior working royal in 2020, has had a troubled relationship with Charles, telling how he felt let down and how his father stopped taking his calls at one stage. The Sussexes left the monarchy in crisis after using an interview with Oprah Winfrey to accuse an unnamed royal of being racist towards their son before he was born, and the wider institution of failing to help Meghan when she had suicidal thoughts. But a senior royal source, at the briefing of Clarence House’s annual review, said it had been ‘wonderful’ to have them … [Read more...] about Prince Charles had ‘very emotional’ first meeting with granddaughter Lilibet

Rotting cottage facing demolition is one of Marlborough’s oldest
Brya Ingram Pensioner Gary Twose is hoping someone will take on the historic house as a project. A derelict cottage more than 140 years old will be demolished unless someone can offer it a home. Misty Cottage was one of the first houses built in Picton, but it has become infested with wood borer beetles, and its old roof and leaky pipes are causing its timber bones to rot. Picton pensioner Gary Twose grew up in the house on Market St and said he was devastated to learn its new owner wanted to pull it down. “It would be such a terrible shame to just put a bulldozer through it ... it’s a piece of Picton’s history,” Twose said. What to Watch While Coming Down From
Photo: Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is a bit of a bait and switch. Despite being named after the King, this nearly three-hour musical is primarily told not from the perspective of the titular character (played by Austin Butler) but that of his manager: the oddly accented, smugly delusional Colonel Tom Parker (a very prosthetics-adorned Tom Hanks). It is through Parker’s self-serving narration that we see Elvis Presley’s celebrity explode and then eventually dim as Parker manipulates him into a long-term Las Vegas contract and surrounds him with doctors who keep him medicated and addicted. For as much as Elvis condemns the music-industry machine, though, it also catalogues and celebrates Presley’s myriad talents, interests, and influences. If you’re looking to dive deeper into the icon, we’ve got watchlist recommendations for you. Palace response to bullying claims against Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, shows family still comes first
No one was expecting the bullying report to be published in full. But the decision to renege on a promise to publish consequential changes to the Royal household’s HR policies in Thursday’s annual Sovereign Grant report represents more than a missed opportunity for “The Firm”. If the investigation has led to the Royal household “improving the policies and procedures” in its HR department, then why not share those with the public? The decision, instead, to bury any lessons that might have been learned flies in the face of the Queen’s longstanding mantra that the monarchy should be as open as possible and not, as the Duke of Edinburgh once put it, “some sort of secret society”. ‘Men in grey suits have a lot to answer for’ It also seems to confirm initial suspicions of an all-pervading “nothing to see here” policy that protects principals at the expense of the people who serve them. When he submitted a complaint in Oct 2018, Jason Knauf cautioned : “I remain concerned that … [Read more...] about Palace response to bullying claims against Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, shows family still comes first

Who Is David Chipman? What You Need To Know About Biden’s Controversial ATF Nominee | The Daily Wire
Starting on Wednesday morning, David Chipman — Joe Biden’s nominee to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) — will appear in front of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee as part of his confirmation hearing. For critics, Chipman’s controversial history as a staunch gun control advocate is cause for grave concern in the context of the Biden administration’s broader war on the Second Amendment. Before working as a gun control activist, Chipman was a special agent with the ATF for 25 years. He was reportedly one of the agents involved in the Waco siege and massacre in 1993, an accusation disputed by Leftist outlets. After the ATF attempted to serve a search and arrest warrant at Mount Carmel Center ranch in Axtell, Texas — home to Branch Davidians, a religious sect — a fierce gunfight ensued. After 51 days, a siege ended with the Mount Carmel Center engulfed in flames as federal agents stormed the building. The fire resulted in the deaths of … [Read more...] about Who Is David Chipman?
