Doctors said I just needed my ‘tired old womb’ removed to ‘cure’ extreme bloating – but they were wrong
DESPERATE to end the extreme bloating and crippling pain she had suffered for years, Sarah Garlick accepted extreme measures. Aged just 40, she underwent a hysterectomy which plunged her into surgical menopause. The now 46-year-old was so sick of being “fobbed off by doctors” who had misdiagnosed her with irritable bowel syndrome, and felt she had no choice but to have the op. She was forced to wear maternity clothes, and could go from being a size 10 to looking nine months pregnant within the space of 30 minutes when she had an “attack”. However, when Sarah, from Portishead, Bristol, recovered from the hysterectomy and her symptoms returned, she realised the drastic measure that changed her life hadn’t solved her bloating problem at all. It took another five years for Sarah to get a final diagnosis; that she was suffering with a ‘torturous colon’, which is when the colon becomes too long and thin, making digestion difficult. Warning as mysterious STI strikes up to 1 in 16 women often with no warning signs
EXPERTS are warning women of a stealthy STI that is often missed, but strikes one in 16 in some parts of the country. Trichomoniasis is more common than the well-known STI gonorrhoea, experts found. But not only is is relatively unheard of, it is not always included in standard STI “check ups” at sexual health clinics or at-home kits. The NHS says to see a GP or sexual health clinic if you have symptoms of the illness, with both men and women affected. However around half of those with it do not show any signs, and are able to spread it further. Others may be mystified by their symptoms, which can be vague. New research suggests that many women are carrying trichomoniasis without realising - up to one in 16 women in some areas. And it is disproportionately affecting women from racial minorities and those in deprived communities. Dr John White, Medical Director at Preventx and Consultant Physician in Sexual Health and HIV, said: “ Trichomoniasis is a relatively … [Read more...] about Warning as mysterious STI strikes up to 1 in 16 women often with no warning signs

‘Biodiversity loss is humanity’s greatest threat’
Mass species extinction is taking place right before our eyes, and yet most of us hardly notice. The dying can't circulate online petitions or stage demonstrations. Often, we don't even know they exist. Of the estimated 8 million animal, fungi and plant species on our planet, only a fraction have been scientifically documented, according to the international biodiversity council IPBES. Yet according to scientists, the world may lose nearly 1 million species by 2030, with one species already becoming extinct every 10 minutes. This is catastrophic, because a world that lacks diversity is a dangerous place for all species, including humans. Later this year, at the second phase of the 15th UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal, Canada almost 200 countries hope to agree on a new international framework for the protection of biodiversity . The agreement text is being prepared this week in Nairobi, Kenya. Will the global community succeed in halting the extinction crisis? Here's … [Read more...] about ‘Biodiversity loss is humanity’s greatest threat’
The Last Stand: Gatekeepers v ‘self-entitled’ walkers where nearly half kauri at risk
JASON DORDAY/STUFF Auckland Council kauri dieback biosecurity manager Lisa Tolich explains why her council has been so proactive in protecting kauri. Kauri are some of New Zealand’s most important taonga – both ecologically and culturally. But the trees are being killed by incurable kauri dieback disease – caused by a pathogen called Phytophthora agathidicida – and the fight to save them has been slow and convoluted. Stuff senior journalist Denise Piper and visual journalist Jason Dorday investigate what is happening to save kauri while they still stand. In the fight to protect kauri, Aucklanders have opened their wallets to help, with ratepayers funding $107 million over 10 years through a natural environment targeted rate . The funding – which towers over the Government’s $32 million for all of Aotearoa – is being used for everything from building new kauri-safe tracks to investing in the latest research. The measures are working, according to Auckland Council’s … [Read more...] about The Last Stand: Gatekeepers v ‘self-entitled’ walkers where nearly half kauri at risk

James Williams said public health officials were tracking trends and Medway had already seen an increase.
