IS the Earth getting hotter or colder? Why should we care? Here's what we know and don't know about our planet's changing climate. What is climate change? The planet's climate has constantly been changing over time. The Earth's average temperature is about 15C, but some evidence suggests it has fluctuated between much higher and much lower in the past. However, the current period of warming is occurring more rapidly than many past events. Climate scientists are concerned that the natural fluctuation is being overtaken by a huge human-induced warming that has serious consequences for the stability of the planet's climate. What is causing climate change? A natural function of the Earth's atmosphere is to keep in some of the heat that is lost from the Earth. This is known as the greenhouse effect. The atmosphere allows the heat from the Sun (short-wave radiation) to pass through to heat the Earth's surface. The Earth's surface then gives off heat (long-wave radiation). This heat is … [Read more...] about What is climate change? The definition, causes and effects
What about climate change
Americans are growing more convinced than ever that climate change is having an impact on our world, and the issue is becoming a more important part of their lives. That is the conclusion of a new report by the Yale Program on Climate Communication and George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication, based on a survey of Americans nationwide. About 72 percent of Americans now say that climate change is important to them, an increase of 9 percentage points since last March, and a 16-point increase since March 2015.In addition, the number of Americans convinced that climate change is mostly caused by humans has spiked to 62 percent, a jump of 8 points in just one year. "My bet is that we've entered a new era of public concern about climate change" says Dr. Ed Maibach, director of the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication. An October 2018 CBS News poll found a similar result, with 61 percent of Americans saying global warming is … [Read more...] about “We’ve entered a new era” of public concern about climate change, survey finds

Matt Ridley 20 October 2018 9:00 AM 20 October 2018 9:00 AM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp Donald Trump now says of climate change: ‘I don’t think it’s a hoax, I think there’s probably a difference. But I don’t know that it’s man-made.’ The climate activist Eric Holthaus said: ‘The world’s top scientists just gave rigorous backing to systematically dismantle capitalism.’ Both are wrong. The truth is that climate change is happening, but more slowly than expected. It’s now 30 years since James Hansen of Nasa raised the alarm and, as climate scientist Pat Michaels and hurricane expert Ryan Maue have pointed out, ‘it’s time to acknowledge that the rapid warming he predicted isn’t happening’. Our own government’s climate-change committee, and the hysterical BBC, should take note. This is an extract from Matt Ridley’s Diary, which appears in … [Read more...] about What Donald Trump gets wrong about climate change
Almost one third (31%) of 18 to 34 year olds are very or extremely worried about climate change, according to new research. In comparison, only one fifth (19%) of over 65s identified as concerned. “Millennials are the first generation that were taught about climate change at school – so we have grown up with it being a fact, something that we are constantly aware of,” Stephanie Shields, 24, told HuffPost UK. While 93% of Brits believe that the world’s climate is definitely or probably changing, only one quarter (25%) of people are very or extremely worried about climate change, according to the annual British Social Attitudes Survey. Meanwhile, 45% are only somewhat worried, and 28% are not very or not at all worried at all. So, why is there such a disparity when it comes to concern for climate change? For Jess Dante, 28, the biggest problem is that it’s “not a visible, tangible problem”. “No one will understand the … [Read more...] about One Third Of 18-34 Year Olds ‘Very Worried’ About Climate Change
