Half of six-year-olds in England do not get enough exercise each day, according to a study. Only 53 per cent do the 60 minutes of vigorous exercise recommended by the NHS for the age group — with girls doing less than boys. This can include playing in the park, games in PE at school and sports like football or tennis. Regular exercise is vital for strengthening muscles and bones during children's development and also in fighting off obesity. It comes amid a growing childhood obesity epidemic that means one in five youngsters in England are too fat by the time they start primary school. Childhood obesity reached 'unprecedented levels' during the Covid pandemic, with children sat at home and not able to run around in playgrounds. Isle of Skye shooting: Dad-of-4, 47, shot dead while trying to stop gunman who ‘stabbed sister and 2 others in rampage’
A DAD was shot dead as he heroically tried stopping a gunman who stabbed his sister and blasted two others in a terrifying rampage. John MacKinnon, 47, was gunned down and killed at a home on the Isle of Skye yesterday. Three other people including John's sister, Rowena MacDonald, 32, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries following the horror. A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the bloodbath. Police raced to the village of Teangue at around 9.30am after John was shot. Sadly the dad-of-four couldn't be saved and was declared dead at the scene. For the last seven months or so, I have written this mental-health column while doing battle with my old enemy, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It’s walloped me round the head with the same force it delivered back when I first experienced it, aged 12. Now well into my forties, I thought that therapy and sobriety, not to mention antidepressants, had got it under control. But in January, it reappeared with a ferocity that left me unable to get out of bed some days. I haven’t been able to understand how I could be back here again, locked in my brain, with thoughts so awful I have, at times, wanted to disappear off the face of the earth entirely. OCD is often thought of as obsessive cleanliness, but it can also centre on terrible intrusive thoughts that leave the sufferer stuck in a pattern of rumination in an effort to quieten them.
