Crossrail house price hotspots: Reading, Maidenhead and Slough are set to reap the benefits from Elizabeth Line opening
Crossrail may be billions of pounds over budget and three-and-a-half years late but it's finally ready to roll. This extraordinary feat of engineering is due to be put into service on Tuesday, when it will adopt its correct title of the Elizabeth Line. The Queen made a surprise visit to Paddington station this week and officially opened the line. On the line: The Thames flows through Maidenhead, which will now enjoy a direct link to Central London thanks to its new Crossrail station Linking Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east with Heathrow and Reading to the west of the capital, it will bind together existing commuter railways, accelerating cross-city travel and relieving overcrowding on the London Underground — particularly the often hellish Central Line. Commuters' journey times will be slashed; Reading to London Liverpool Street, for example, will take under an hour. RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Back to school! Couple halve their monthly bills by ditching renting to live on a narrowboat
Like so many of us, couple Jack and Gemma Cox were struggling to get on the property ladder while spending a load of money on rent. So they took an unconventional approach: ditching renting and moving aboard a narrowboat instead. Jack, a 29-year-old secondary school teacher, and Gemma, a 29-year-old paramedic, were paying £1,000 a month (for rent and bills) to live in their flat in Manchester , all while trying to put as much money as they could into a Help To Buy ISA in the hopes of buying a place closer to Gemma’s family in the Dales. They realised that, looking at an average house price of £280,000, they faced years of strict saving just to be able to afford a property they might not even like. Rather than settling for that path, they binned off their ISA and bought a two-bed beam boat, moored between Manchester and Yorkshire. Their monthly outgoings have been halved as a result. Gemma said: ‘We took a loan out to buy the boat, and even still, the boat was … [Read more...] about Couple halve their monthly bills by ditching renting to live on a narrowboat

Rally revs up for Taranaki start after Covid delays
Shorter daylight hours have seen some stages of the Targa NZ rally, which starts in New Plymouth on Wednesday, cut because the five-day race across the Central North Island is being held seven months late. The rally, which was originally planned for October, but was postponed due to last year’s Covid lockdown, has attracted 134 entries. “Due to there being less daylight hours (in May compared with October) we made the decision to remove the final stages on the first (Tarata) and third (Bushy Park) days, as well as the Motere stage on day five,” Ultimate Rally Group owner and event director Peter Martin said. Martin said he was feeling relief as the start day got closer, after last year’s delay and having to cancel the event in 2020.
