Dan Greengrass Tweeted at around 8:30pm yesterday evening that a couple had just got engaged at The Bell Hotel in Norwich - on curry night, no less. However, speaking to this paper, he said that sadly he did not know who the couple were. “I was eating my dinner and the guy proposed...the place started cheering but I have no idea who the couple are,” he said. Unfortunately, the manager of the establishment was not even aware that someone got engaged, saying that it is a busy pub and he did not hear or see anything. And so our hunt continues... The owners of Bargain Booze could be about to enter administration as the British high street continues to decline. Conviviality, the firm at the helm of the discount alcohol chain, failed to gain emergency funding to secure its future after disclosing a huge £30m tax bill to shareholders. This latest blow to the high street places more than 2,500 jobs at risk. Alongside running a network of stores, Conviviality is a key part of the supply chain to the UK drinks industry, reports the Manchester Evening News . The company supply more than 23,000 pubs and restaurants - including the JD Wetherspoon chain. Conviviality’s chief executive has stepped down after issuing a string of profit warnings - and administrators are understood to be lined up to step in soon. Conviviality was forced to go cap in hand to investors to raise £125m as a result of the previously undisclosed tax bill, but it has been unable to convince them of its long-term future. A 60-YEAR-OLD man left “seriously” injured after an altercation in a Merseyside pub fell over and cracked his head on the ground, detectives believe. The punter got involved in a flashpoint at the Clarville Wetherspoons, Wallasey , just after midnight today. False rumours circulating around Wirral suggested the victim was bottled and was hit over the head with a pint glass. But Merseyside Police today said that theory was wide of the mark and confirmed the 60-year-old suffered his main head injury from the blow on the ground. Officers think the man tried to step in to diffuse an argument, but got hurt in the process. Wetherspoons, on Wallasey Road, which usually opens at around 8am, was shut today until approximately 3pm. Police officers were seen inside the premises conducting their enquiries. Staff at Wetherspoons were today “banned” from talking about the fracas. A man suffered a head injury after an altercation at a pub in Wirral in the early hours of Wednesday. Police were called to the Clairville Wetherspoons in Wallasey Road, Liscard at 12.30am to a report that a 60-year-old had been injured. The man was taken to hospital, where his condition is described as serious but stable. A 33-year-old male voluntarily attended a local police station for questioning. A petition has been set-up to welcome a controversial planning application for a Wetherspoon pub in the centre of Dorking . GetSurrey understands the popular pub chain plans to combine five existing shops in St Martin’s Walk to create a massive new pub/restaurant. The petition "Welcome JD Wetherspoon to Dorking" has so far achieved 245 signatures but it is currently being overpowered by a petition that is resisting the application, which has more than 800 signatures. People commenting on the petition have argued that a Wetherspoon will bring a new lease of life to the centre of Dorking.
