Ravi Shankar obituary
Ravi Shankar, who has died aged 92 after undergoing heart surgery, was the Indian maestro who put the sitar on the musical map. George Harrison called him "the godfather of world music" and it was Shankar's vision that brought the sounds of the raga into western consciousness. He was thus the first performer and composer to substantially bridge the musical gap between India and the west. He was still winning awards in the new century: in 2002 his album Full Circle: Live at Carnegie Hall (2000) achieved a Grammy for best world music album. Shankar's distinction as a sitar player lay in his brilliant virtuosity, creativity and musicianship. In the west his name is synonymous with the music of India. Ravindra Shankar – in Bengali, Robindro Shaunkar – Chowdhury was born in the holy city of Benares, now Varanasi. The youngest of five sons, he belonged to a family of Bengali Brahmins from Jessore, now in Bangladesh, who were much influenced by the reformist ideas of writers such … [Read more...] about Ravi Shankar obituary

Opinion: Banning second-hand imports doesn’t solve East Africa’s clothes problem
The move to not ban the sale of second-hand clothing was a relief to petty traders. In 2015, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania agreed on a three-year plan to gradually phase out the importation of second-hand clothes and apparel from the United States in particular. Taxes were increased exponentially on second-hand clothes to deter more imports and a complete ban was to take effect in 2019. But the ban would have come at a heavy price. Sensing the danger, the Trump administration acted fast and issued an ultimatum for 23 February 2018, for these leaders to rescind their plan or face the consequences. The US did this to protect its second-hand export sector. And on that date before the ultimatum expired, leaders from the East Africa region, with the exception of Rwanda's Paul Kagame, met in Kampala to discuss the repercussions. In the end they caved in to US demands. However, the trade deficit for many African countries is instantly recognizable. Imports from … [Read more...] about Opinion: Banning second-hand imports doesn’t solve East Africa’s clothes problem
Pope Francis honors martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador
After years of stagnant discussion over honoring martyred bishop Oscar Romero in the Catholic Church, things suddenly moved very quickly. The urgency began when Argentina's Jorge Bergoglio became Pope Francis in 2013. Two years later, he beatified Archbishop Romero, who was gunned down in El Salvador in 1980. On Sunday, Romero was one of six to be canonized as a saint in a ceremony led by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square. Tens of thousands of people gathered in St Peter’s Square on Sunday as Pope Francis declared the two men saints, with others who were born in Italy, Germany and Spain in the 18th and 19th centuries. A photograph of Oscar Romero is carried during a ceremony in El Salvador Romero: a national hero Romero has been considered a national hero and a champion of peace and human rights in his native El Salvador for years. His grave in the Cathedral of San Salvador is a place of pilgrimage for many Latin Americans. When Romero's … [Read more...] about Pope Francis honors martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador
