West Ham closing in on £25m Rennes defender after pulling out of James Tarkowski race
West Ham hope to sign Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd in the next few days - after pulling out of the race for James Tarkowski. The Hammers had three bids for Burnley centre-back Tarkowski turned down two years ago and were expected to go back in for him this summer when his contract expires. But the former England centre back will be 30 this year and has already been offered £120,000-a-week by Aston Villa, with Everton and Fulham also interested. So Hammers boss David Moyes has switched his sights to Morocco star Aguerd, who has just turned 26, and talks are now at an advanced stage. Aguerd, who is rated at around £25million, fits the bill for Moyes because he is left-footed and can also fill in at left-back if necessary. The West Ham boss made up his mind about him on a recent scouting trip to France, and the club hope negotiations can be concluded quickly. Hammers left-back Arthur Masuaku is set to leave the club this summer, and 33-year-old centre-back Angelo Ogbonna has been … [Read more...] about West Ham closing in on £25m Rennes defender after pulling out of James Tarkowski race

European stock markets struggle to recover
LONDON: European stock markets struggled to mount a rebound Wednesday as investors weighed the fallout from surging inflation, higher interest rates, China's economic slowdown and the Ukraine war. After climbing Monday, global equities retreated Tuesday as volatility grips financial markets. A series of weak indicators around the world and downbeat forecasts from big firms have chilled trading floors in recent weeks as the surge in prices begins to drag on consumer confidence, with warnings now swirling of a possible global recession. The tech sector was again in the firing line after Snap, the parent of social media app Snapchat, provided a gloomy economic outlook, sending its shares diving more than 40% on Wall Street Tuesday. Wall Street titans followed Snap down, with Facebook-parent Meta and Google-parent Alphabet tanking. "The feel good factor from earlier in the week has fizzed away but there is still some element of relief washing through the financial markets that … [Read more...] about European stock markets struggle to recover

After high temperatures for much of May and a warm weekend, people will have had to dig out their coats and umbrellas as unseasonably poor conditions have hit. A “small tornado” was even spotted in the sky over the English Channel on Tuesday morning, looking east from Broadstairs shortly before midday, reported KentLive. Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said: “Windy on Wednesday and Thursday before things slowly settle down from the south on Friday and the promise of some sunshine on Saturday.
