The firm announced in June it planned to move production of its Land Rover Discovery SUV from its Solihull plant. There will also be a "temporary pause" in production at the Wolverhampton engine manufacturing centre, understood to affect about a third of workers. JLR said "the external environment remains challenging" for business. The company, which is owned by the Indian group Tata Motors, said it was taking "decisive actions to achieve the necessary operational efficiencies to safeguard long-term success". The job cuts come as a response to "fluctuating demand", JLR said, and are on top of the 1,000 cut in April at the Solihull plant . The company previously blamed a sharp … [Read more...] about JLR to cut 200 jobs as production moves to Slovakia

How the West can make Putin pay for what he’s done to Ukraine
Sergey Lavrov, Vladimir Putin’s foreign minister , seemed outraged as he accused the EU of “theft”. The bloc’s officials were discussing the possibility of using frozen Russian state assets to fund the reconstruction of Ukraine. Yet the cash in question is not inconsiderable, particularly when taking the devastation of entire cities into account. At the onset of the war in Ukraine, the West froze about half of Putin’s $640bn (£524bn) war chest of foreign assets, cutting the Kremlin off from $300bn held in overseas accounts. Seventy-three European Parliament members have now called for the assets to be liquidated and sent to Kyiv, writing in a letter to foreign policy head Joseph Borrell: “it is equally fair that Russia’s state assets are also dedicated to support the victims of Putin aggression”. As signs of normal life return to Ukraine with some construction works beginning again and businesses reopening, there are questions over how it will fund its post-conflict rebuild. … [Read more...] about How the West can make Putin pay for what he’s done to Ukraine
Amid war in Ukraine, are Estonia’s Russian speakers ready to embrace the West?
The room filled with curiosity when a resident in Narva, on the Russian border, confronted Estonia's defense minister with fears of Russia "needing to rescue its own compatriots." For some onlookers, it signaled an easing of the complex ties between Russian and Estonian speakers in Estonia. Defense Minister Kalle Laanet came to "Estonia's Russia" for the town-hall-style meeting on Monday to address residents' concerns in the wake of the war launched by their neighbor . Would there be shelters in case of bombing? How could friction between Ukrainian refugees and local Russians be prevented? "We have 70,000 gray passports in Estonia, we have 80,000 Russian citizens in Estonia," Narva native Margarita Källo told Laanet at Tartu University's Narva College. "I see it as a big problem, first of all for Estonia, for our security." After the Soviet occupation, the Estonian government took a hard line toward residents seen as having been imported by the USSR to work in the Baltic … [Read more...] about Amid war in Ukraine, are Estonia’s Russian speakers ready to embrace the West?
Russia’s display of military might sent the West a strong message – just not the one Putin intended
Vladimir Putin likes to use Moscow’s Victory Day parade , the annual event to mark the triumph over Nazi Germany, as a means of messaging the West. There had been speculation the Russian leader might use his speech on Monday to call for a mobilisation of Russian society and the economy, better to fight his increasingly expensive assault on Ukraine. In the event, he did not declare “war” but a strong message about Russia’s military might was sent anyway – just not the one Putin would have wished. Instead the parade - hugely reduced in size and lacking a flypast apparently for reasons of bad weather - was the usual display of equipment in service today and a smattering of “new” kit designed to make us quake at Russia’s armed forces. Look closer though, and all is not as Moscow would have us believe. The T-14 Armata tank We were treated to a view of the T-14 Armata tank. Yet another view, as it turns out, because this “new” piece of equipment was first introduced in … [Read more...] about Russia’s display of military might sent the West a strong message – just not the one Putin intended

Why Son Heung-min is the most under-rated striker on the planet
Son Heung-min is the type of signing that every scout, sporting director and coach would normally clamour to claim. But at Tottenham Hotspur, there is no argument over who should take the credit for the arrival of the South Korean seven years ago. Chairman Daniel Levy got more stick over failing to land Saido Berahino, now of Sheffield Wednesday, from West Bromwich Albion than any credit he received for signing Son for £22 million in the summer of 2015. But, just as missing out on Berahino proved to be a lucky escape, Son must rank as Tottenham’s best signing of the last seven years and it was the hands-on approach of Levy, which has not always worked out for the best, that proved to be vital. Levy did not have an invite to Bayer Leverkusen’s BayArena stadium to meet Son, when he turned up unannounced with the intention of signing him. He waited until Son and his representatives consented to talk to him and would not leave until an agreement had been reached. That persistence … [Read more...] about Why Son Heung-min is the most under-rated striker on the planet
The Aftermath of Ebola
The open-air GoByeandChop market in Monrovia, Liberia, sprawls across a field of mud. Customers pool around rough stalls, repurposed shipping containers, and wheelbarrows full of underwear or cassava tubers. When I visited the market late last year, the damp air smelled of coal-fire smoke and spices and rotting garbage. A dog’s corpse lay bloated in a puddle pockmarked by steady rain. Deep in the market sat a dim warehouse filled with tables of meat: fried fish, eels, a few goats’ heads covered in flies. Then row after row of bushmeat, wild game killed by hunters. Many of the piled-up cuts were unidentifiable, but the origins of one heap near the front was clear. At the top, a monkey’s hand curled dried fingers toward the ceiling. Long before West Africa’s 2014 Ebola epidemic, Liberia was already stricken—by poverty, corruption, hunger. Bushmeat, a cheap source of protein, is a source of the disease, and scarcity, more generally, is what typically brings people into contact with … [Read more...] about The Aftermath of Ebola

Fears ‘Black Widow’ murderer ‘may strike again’ as she’s prepared for release
A detective who investigated a killer dubbed the Black Widow fears she may strike again as she is prepared for release. Dena Thompson, 61, is serving a life sentence for murder after hiding anti-depressants in second husband Julian Webb’s curry at their home in Yapton, West Sussex, on his birthday in 1994. His body was exhumed seven years later after Thompson was cleared in 2000 of trying to kill her third husband, Richard Thompson. The Mirror can reveal she is currently in an open prison and is expected to be recommended for release after her next parole hearing in the coming weeks. Sources with knowledge of her case said she was assessed as a high risk even before she was convicted of Julian’s murder. Julian Webb ( Image: Collect Picture) Richard Thompson ( Image: Press Association) Officials were concerned of any relationship she formed, given her history of manipulating, deceiving and grooming vulnerable men, the source said.
