‘UK’s cheapest petrol station’ – I can’t stop crying after selling up
THE owners of a rural petrol station have sold up just weeks after making headlines for selling fuel at rock bottom prices. Ian Bailey, who owned Bailey's Garage in Abergavenny, Wales, for 50 years said the decision to sell up came after him and his wife were approached about being bought out. Despite him saying it was a decision he "couldn't say no to", Ian said his wife, part of the family business, had not stopped crying since the news of the sale was confirmed, Wales Online reports. He said: "I also feel really sad and as though a family member has died to be honest with you. "Ascona Retail approached us 18 months ago to buy it, and we’ve not known since whether it was actually going to happen or not. "Even until last Thursday we didn’t really know." Jack Grealish tweets ‘f***ing hell’ in response to claim he ‘told Pep where to go’
Jack Grealish has furiously dismissed a claim he told his Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola 'where to go' during a sideline exchange that took place at the start of their Premier League opener. Grealish was handed a start by Guardiola for their first league fixture of the season - and was seen talking to his manager after just three minutes had passed. The following day, after a report purported what the England international was saying to the Spaniard, Grealish felt the need to lash out on his official Twitter account. READ MORE: Erling Haaland would have ‘punched teammate' if they took ball off him for penalty The initial post read 'Jack Grealish spotted telling Pep Guardiola where to go three minutes into Man City's win against West Ham'. James Wade column: I dashed back from Barnsley for son’s birth before heading Down Under
It’s not often I am delighted to be on double one, but I couldn’t be happier to announce that my wife Samantha and I have now got a second child in the Wade household. Our youngest son, Alfie, was born on Thursday and after some early worries, both mother and baby are now home safe and healthy. It was a bit of a mad dash for me, as I was at the Players Championship events in Barnsley on Wednesday. While I was keen to focus on the job at hand, it is far easier said than done when your mind is hundreds of miles away worrying about your family. With the benefit of hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have gone to Barnsley as my heart was at home with Samantha, but I have always wanted to give my all to the game and try to pick up ranking points wherever possible. It was just difficult to do myself justice. The most important, truthful things you should know about bulimia nervosa
There’s a lot of misconception around eating disorders and the noticing of signs or symptoms of one. Bulimia nervosa is one disorder that is frequently misinterpreted, especially within the film industry. You often see actresses playing the role of someone who suffers with bulimia, but I feel they don’t portray all aspects of the disorder. Often the actresses are extremely thin and exercise freaks; women who control every aspect of their life and feel the need to also control their food. Women who are seen to be throwing up after every plate of food – if they are ever actually eating a plate of food – and women who choose to live off a couple of nuts a day. I can’t help but feel the film industry just got it so, so wrong. Of course, some aspects in films like Kate’s Secret are correct, but I feel they were not perceived in the correct light. I think it’s important to address a few things that are often missed out among people’s perceptions of bulimia. Here’s some … [Read more...] about The most important, truthful things you should know about bulimia nervosa
Get the look: Interior designer Kelly Hoppen’s stunning barn-style kitchen
Post-pandemic, renowned interior designer, author and ex-BBC Dragon Kelly Hoppen dreamed of escaping to the country… as long as she could take a little bit of the city with her. She took possession of the broken-down shell of a Cotswolds lambing barn, turning it into a 2,500sq ft home with three wings facing on to a central courtyard. It has been her weekend retreat for two years. ‘The barn’s interior is a mix of inspiration from the city and country, a nice medium,’ says Kelly. ‘You feel like you’re definitely in a rural environment, but you also feel like a part of you is from London . ‘It’s reflective of my post-pandemic lifestyle. When we first viewed it, it was pure rubble and I just made a decision then and there as I had been looking for so long and wanted a space like this in the country.’ Downstairs it’s light and airy with high ceilings and exposed original wood beams. The big, multifunctional living area is great for when guests visit. Kelly wanted the … [Read more...] about Get the look: Interior designer Kelly Hoppen’s stunning barn-style kitchen
Metropolitan Police launch targeted stop and search – but does it work?
Standing outside the Stratford Centre, a dozen Metropolitan Police officers get ready to stop and search people they suspect are involved in crime. One young man approaches and jokes to his friends ‘I’m not going to be stopped and searched’ – before the uniformed cops pull him aside. He is put in handcuffs while they carry out a full body search, as witnessed by a Metro.co.uk reporter. No drugs, knives or weapons were found – just one example of the tens of thousands of searches that do not end with a ‘positive outcome’, as it’s called by Scotland Yard . There were 128,796 searches for suspected drugs from June 2021 to June 2022, and the Met found drugs on 33,850 occasions. This standalone incident showcases the controversy around stop and search – both for the communities it impacts and for the police who enforce it. Young people from BAME backgrounds are disproportionately affected, with them nine times more likely to be stopped than white people. The Met … [Read more...] about Metropolitan Police launch targeted stop and search – but does it work?
Rail company cuts timetables and halts ticket sales due to ‘unofficial strike’
Short-notice strike action has seen a train operator slash its timetables and widespread delays are expected from this weekend. Avanti West Coast, which runs services on the west coast mainline between London , Birmingham , Manchester and Glasgow, accused train drivers’ union Aslef of carrying out ‘unofficial strike action’ from Saturday. Services between London Euston and Manchester are expected to be the worst affected, with frequencies reduced from three trains per hour to just one from Sunday. The company has also paused sales of train tickets to travel from Sunday until September 11 while it establishes a new timetable. Tickets are expected to be released weekly on a rolling basis, starting from the end of this week. Avanti managing director Phil Whittingham wrote in a letter to the rail industry that the ‘current industrial relations climate’ has resulted in ‘severe staff shortages in some grades through increased sickness levels, as well as unofficial … [Read more...] about Rail company cuts timetables and halts ticket sales due to ‘unofficial strike’
