Hackers have hijacked more than 4,000 websites, including government sites, in the US, UK and Australia and other nations over the weekend to exploit the processing power of visitors' computers and secretly mine cryptocurrency. Security researcher Scott Helme first reported the incident after he was alerted by a friend who received a malware warning when visiting the website of the UK's data protection watchdog, the Information's Commissioner's Office (ICO). He traced the issue to Texthelp's BrowseAloud, a popular plugin that helps blind and partially-sighted people access the web. Helme found that threat actors had modified the accessibility plugin by inserting obfuscated code to inject the infamous Coinhive miner into targeted websites. Running at 40% CPU utilisation, the cryptomining script would then covertly mine for Monero coins without the knowledge of the user visiting the website. Helme managed to trace the compromised script to 4,275 websites across the globe including NHS … [Read more...] about Hackers hijack over 4,000 US, UK and Australian government websites to secretly mine cryptocurrency

Ahead of President Xi Jinping's attendance at this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, set to be held on November 17-19 in Manila, China has asked the Philippines not to raise "contentious issues" - a possible reference to the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea (SCS) - in order to ensure Xi's visit is "smooth, safe and successful." In a recent meeting with his Philippine counterpart Albert del Rosario, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly underscored Beijing's objection to any effort to bring the long-raging disputes to an international arena. "They both agreed that APEC is an economic forum and it would be an improper venue to discuss political security issues," Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said in a news conference, referring to the first high-level talks held by the neighboring countries since 2011. Wang also met with Philippine President Benigno Aquino who pledged a warm welcome for China's leader Xi, … [Read more...] about No talk of maritime disputes at APEC summit?
Facing a chorus of protesters that threatened to drown out the Dutch politician, Geert Wilders was one of the main attractions at an event in Perth on Wednesday that launched a new Australian political party, the Australian Liberty Alliance (ALA). The ALA shares many pillars with Wilders's Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Netherlands , a controversial party that gained seats in parliament campaigning against the "Islamization" of the Netherlands. During Wilders's visit, the message was similar: "Let us reclaim our countries," Wilders told a mixed crowd of supporters and chanting opponents. "Stop the mass immigration from Islamic countries." Opponents chanted "racists are not welcome here." Wilders was controversially granted a visa by Australian authorities, but the Premier of West Australia, Colin Barnett, blocked state-owned venues from hosting the Dutch politician. Wilders has been banned from entering other countries due to his anti-Islamic views. "I do not support him and I do … [Read more...] about Dutch politician Geert Wilders kicks-off anti-Islam party in Australia
Too much "sucking" on a website is suspicious - particularly to web filters trying to protect viewers from offensive material. "Caution: This profile may include potentially sensitive content," appears on a warning page you get redirected to when you want to enter @LonelyWhale's Twitter channel. "Do you still want to view it?" But the Lonely Whale Foundation has a perfectly wholesome goal: to reduce the amount of single-use plastic straws. "We bleed 10 million tons of plastic into the ocean every single year," says Adrian Grenier, co-founder of Lonely Whale. "And plastic straws are just a small fraction of that - but it's a great place to start." The Stop Sucking initiative (campaigning under its Twitter hashtag #StopSucking) points out that people in the United States alone use 500 million plastic straws every day. Make it a habit "We all suck because we don't do enough for the oceans - and we all suck on single use plastic straws every single day, an … [Read more...] about ‘Stop Sucking’ for the environment!
