How clear are your memories of exam halls? Mine are surprisingly sharp. I can still see the invigilators’ grim faces, as though any expression cheerier than an undertaker’s might downplay the seriousness of the occasion. I can still hear the shriek of a hundred chair legs against the floor as we all took our seats; that collective intake of breath – “OK, you can do this” – as we opened our exam papers.
