1940 25th June Bombs were dropped over the Midlands. The censor at the time would not allow newspapers to print the name of places where events took place, but now we know where the bombs were dropped on our area. One fell in a field near the home of Mr R. J. Palmer, a well-known rugby football player, of Wykin Fields Farm. A second bomb dropped within a dozen yards of the house. It made a crater in the rose garden, uprooting trees and blew a fence flat at the end of the tennis court. Miraculously no damage was done to the house and the occupants escaped injury. Just 300 yards away bombs dropped in the garden of a hosiery manufacturer, Mr R. Bedford. Other bombs fell some distance away in Wykin and Stoke Golding, falling in fields. Harold Shipman killed at least 218 of his patients, yet, until his crimes came to light, he was respected - loved even - by the people of Hyde, where he worked as a GP from 1977.
