Hopes rising for millions of drivers fuel duty might NOT rise in Budget after Sun’s Keep It Down campaign

· February 25, 2021 ·

HOPES are rising for millions of drivers that fuel duty might NOT rise in next week's Budget following The Sun's Keep It Down campaign. Mr Sunak is under pressure to keep the freeze on fuel duty rises as he searches for ways to fill his Covid black hole. Pleas not to hike fuel duty — backed by The Sun’s Keep It Down crusade — come as a new eco-petrol is sanctioned for use at UK pumps. Ministers signed off plans for E10 — a mix of petrol and ethanol made from materials including grains, sugars and waste wood — from September. The cut in emissions will be like taking 350,000 cars off our roads. Hopes of Rishi keeping fuel duty down come after The Sun revealed how more than two dozen Tory MPs have written to him urging him not to raise fuel tax in his Budget. They say Boris Johnson made a pledge in 2019 not to increase the hated levy and breaking the vow would betray voters. The 26 Conservatives - including former ministers Tracey Crouch, Esther McVey , … [Read more...] about Hopes rising for millions of drivers fuel duty might NOT rise in Budget after Sun’s Keep It Down campaign

Biodegradable plastic is misleading because most will not break down in compost heaps, UCL scientists say

· June 6, 2019 ·

P lastic packaging labelled “biodegradable” or “compostable” is misleading because most does not break down naturally and ends up polluting the environment, scientists have said. Experts from University College London (UCL) have criticised companies which sell products such as “eco-friendly” nappies, bags or cutlery without telling consumers it require industrial processors to break them down. The team said the UK has too few plants capable of recycling the material - around 170 - meaning much ends up in landfill. Consumers also mistakenly add “compostable” plastic waste to their food or garden compost, where it decomposes barely any quicker than normal plastic waste. The comments follow a recent study by the University of Plymouth which found that biodegradable plastic bags were still capable of being used as bags three years after being buried underground because they had degraded so little. … [Read more...] about Biodegradable plastic is misleading because most will not break down in compost heaps, UCL scientists say

BBC sends 30 staff on a course on how to drink WATER

· February 24, 2021 ·

THIRTY BBC staff lapped up an online guide to drinking water funded by taxpayers. Critics blasted the hour-long webinar, titled Hydration, as “pointless and patronising”. The event was among several courses aimed at supporting workers’ mental and physical health. A description emailed to staff said: “Attending this webinar will help you identify the importance of being fully hydrated and find practical ways to achieve this state every day. “It will help you understand how being fully hydrated will improve health, wellbeing and performance.” A Freedom of Information request revealed 30 staff took part but the BBC did not divulge the cost of the course. 'UTTERLY POINTLESS' Critic Robin Aitken, who worked for the BBC for 25 years, said: “It’s absolute madness, utterly pointless and incredibly patronising.” John O’Connell, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “The BBC has been caught pouring taxpayers’ money down the drain yet again.” The Sun revealed last month … [Read more...] about BBC sends 30 staff on a course on how to drink WATER

‘Normal’ summer hope for Brits as lockdown to end on June 21 after 4 key steps

· February 22, 2021 ·

Boris Johnson has raised hopes of a ‘normal’ summer by announcing plans to lift all Covid restrictions in England by June 21. The Prime Minister set out a four-step easing of restrictions starting with the return of all children to school and social mixing outdoors ( see below ). He predicted that the success of the vaccine roll-out meant: “Today the end really is in sight”. Mr Johnson told MPs: “A wretched year will give way to a Spring and a Summer that will be incomparably better”. He later added that the “crocus of hope is poking through the frost”. But in a dramatic shift in tone, he stressed that his approach must now be “cautious” to avoid a fourth national lockdown. And he admitted that he could not guarantee that the measures would be “irreversible” - although he wanted them to be. What is your view? Have your say in the comments section Tory MPs have urged him to lift measures by April 26 now that more than 17.7m people have received their first Covid … [Read more...] about ‘Normal’ summer hope for Brits as lockdown to end on June 21 after 4 key steps
