A duo of experts consulting for a company wanting to turn rubbish collected in Manawatū into various useable products says the technology is sound and will not pollute the environment. Bioplant NZ has applied to Horizons Regional Council for resource consents it needs to build a pyrolysis plant on land leased from Manawatū Regional Council in Feilding next to the town’s transfer station. According to the Ministry for the Environment, pyrolysis involves heating waste without exposure to oxygen, which then produces gas, liquid and solids. Bioplant needs consents from Horizons to discharge gases to the air. British Gas has reopened its hardship fund for non-customers today (July 1) with grants worth up to £1,500 for struggling households. The British Gas Energy Trust for Individual and Families closed in the spring but is now accepting applications once again. To be eligible for help, you need to live in England, Scotland or Wales and be in debt to your energy company (not specific to British Gas). You must also not have more than £1,000 in savings and have received help from a money advice agency. The easiest - and the free way - to do this is through a charity. The Queen has made her second appearance of the day as she triggered the lighting of the principal Jubilee beacon at Windsor Castle. At the same time thousands of beacons were lit in villages, towns and cities across the UK to honour the Queen's 70-year reign. Her Majesty started the ceremony from the quadrangle at Windsor Castle, with the Duke of Cambridge representing his grandmother, alongside other members of the Royal Family, at Buckingham Palace, the site of the "Tree of Trees" principal beacon. Electricity arrived in the late 20th century to the low-income Enchanted Valley community – which drew its name from a nearby residential project – but the utility never connected it to the city’s sewage network.
