Wess Mitchell, the U.S. State Department's top diplomat for European affairs, is stepping down from his post, a person familiar with the issue confirmed to POLITICO. Mitchell's portfolio at the State Department includes dealing with Russia, a particularly sensitive issue given ongoing investigations into whether U.S. President Donald Trump's campaigned colluded with Moscow during the 2016 presidential campaign. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Washington Post first reported the news of Mitchell's departure. The Post, citing a resignation letter Mitchell sent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, wrote that Mitchell said he was leaving for personal and professional reasons and that February 15 will be his last day. Mitchell, whose official title is assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasian affairs, told the Post in an interview that he was not resigning out of protest to Trump's policies, which have included questioning the … [Read more...] about US State Department’s top diplomat for European affairs resigns

Until the nineteenth century, city status in England and Wales was associated with the presence of a cathedral, such as York Minster. City status in the United Kingdom is granted by the monarch of the United Kingdom to a select group of communities: as of 2014[update], there are 69 cities in the United Kingdom – 51 in England, six in Wales, seven in Scotland and five in Northern Ireland. This association between having a cathedral and being called a city was established in the early 1540s when King Henry VIII founded dioceses (each having a cathedral in the see city) in six English towns and also granted them city status by issuing letters patent. With pressure building on both legal and legislative fronts, President Trump paid his respects at Arlington Cemetery on a gloomy Saturday pausing to praise a federal judge's ruling that invalidates the Affordable Care Act. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: It was a big ruling. It's a great ruling for our country. MARGARET BRENNAN: But after a spectacular Oval Office squabble with Democrats over the President's demand for border wall funding, is agreement on anything in the New Year … [Read more...] about Full transcript: “Face the Nation” on December 16, 2018

Alia E. Dastagir USA TODAY Published 1:01 p.m. UTC Jun 13, 2018 Sarah McBride wasn't sure if she could do it. She wasn't even sure she should. She watched that Sunday in October as her Twitter and Facebook feeds filled with stories from survivor after survivor — accounts that would eventually stir the conscience of a nation that had long refused to reckon with its culture of sexual violence. After a restless night contemplating whether she was strong enough to lift the weight of silence, she gathered her courage and tweeted those devastating words: "Me Too." Until that moment, McBride, national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign and the first transgender American to address a major party convention, had only disclosed her sexual assault to a few people. She said she stayed silent for years because she feared she wouldn't be believed. "There's this baseline level of disbelief that survivors of sexual assault writ large … [Read more...] about She was sexually assaulted within months of coming out. She isn’t alone.
