‘Pleeeeeeease mummy, I want to go. I want a sleepover and midnight feast!’ Once your child starts making close friends, soon they will be asking for a sleepover and this is something of a childhood milestone. But when is the right time to let your child sleep over at a friend’s house for the first time? Is there a right or wrong time and how can you ensure it is a good experience? Naturally, as parents or carers, we want to keep our kids safe and happy, so we talked to Dr Amanda Gummer, child psychologist and founder of The Good Play Guide and Kavin Wadhar, parenting expert and founder of KidCoachApp about sleepovers. Want to know my future
Predicting the future from the social media swamp
About 20 years ago my techno-utopian friends in California began to have a strange glint in their eye. It’s the sort of glint people acquire after joining a religious cult, and they were obsessed with a new idea. What they believed was that with so many people now communicating via the internet, what they called a "Hive Mind" was beginning to emerge. And from this we could derive people’s thoughts and intentions. Some even hoped it would help replace today’s creaking democratic institutions with whizzy new virtual ones. From the late 1990s, Harvard University’s new Berkman Centre, a part of its law school that was once memorably described as a "New Age crank tank", devoted considerable energy to this idea, which it called "emergent democracy". Less surprisingly, Google's founders also loved the idea – particularly after their new search engine was flatteringly described as a "database of intentions". However, many more of us found both the Hive Mind and the people advancing it to … [Read more...] about Predicting the future from the social media swamp

How Angela Rayner became a force to be reckoned with
When she appeared on the Matt Forde podcast in January, the most interesting thing Angela Rayner said wasn’t about the length of her skirt or the crossing and uncrossing of her legs in the House of Commons. Although she did banter with the Left-wing comedian about “the meme about Sharon Stone” that had been doing the rounds, the most telling part of the interview came at the beginning when she was announced as “the most powerful woman in the Labour Party”. Striding onto the stage at the Duchess Theatre in Covent Garden, where the podcasts are recorded in front of an audience, she joked: “I said he had to introduce me like that or I wouldn’t come on.” Like everything the 42-year-old deputy Labour leader says in jest, there appeared to be an element of truth to it. Later revealing how, “God, yeah”, she’d love to be prime minister one day, it is perhaps little wonder that this teenage mother turned political powerhouse is fast emerging as one of the Opposition’s best hopes of … [Read more...] about How Angela Rayner became a force to be reckoned with
Martin McGuinness dies at 66: Queen to send private message to widow of former IRA commander
It is a measure of Martin McGuinness’s remarkable transformation from IRA commander to peacemaker that Buckingham Palace announced yesterday that the Queen has decided to send a private letter of condolence to his widow. The IRA had, after all, assassinated Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Queen’s second cousin and Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle, by placing a bomb on his fishing boat. The earl’s 14-year-old grandson was also murdered in the atrocity in 1979, the same year McGuinness was appointed the Provisional IRA’s chief of staff. But 33 years after those murders, Her Majesty found herself shaking the “bloodied” hands of the “Butcher of Bogside”. The historic photographs of their first meeting in 2012 illustrated just how far he, and Irish politics, had travelled. On Tuesday Buckingham Palace declined to issue a public statement on the former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister. But the Queen’s offer to send private condolences to Bernie, his widow, shows … [Read more...] about Martin McGuinness dies at 66: Queen to send private message to widow of former IRA commander
