A 1-1 draw to Sevilla brought to an end Atletico Madrid's home commitments for the 2018/19 season, although their ground will still host the Champions League final in June, and this term we've seen a larger Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Exactly 60,234 people were in attendance to pay tributes and say farewell to Diego Godin, and this was a vast increase on attendances in the stadium's first year of existence. The total number of fans through the gates at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano this season has been 1,556,154 which is a significant increase on the 1,385,014 in 2017/18. Admittedly, this season has seen Los Colchoneros play more home matches, but the average number of supporters in the ground per match is the figure which really shows the difference. Last season it was 53,660 on average per home game, whereas in 2018/19 this has increased to an average of 55,393 fans. The capacity of the much-loved Estadio Vicente Calderon was 55,000, and the average attendance at the new … [Read more...] about A larger Wanda Metropolitano
Football fans have taken to social media to vent their frustration at the number of Champions League final tickets allocated for general sale. UEFA confirmed on Thursday morning that 38,000 tickets would be put on sale to the public with 34,000 of those to be shared between supporters of the two finalists. But considering Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano, the venue for the showpiece game, will have a capacity of 63,500 for the final, the size of the allocation has caused outrage. In total, 25,500 tickets have been "allocated to the local organising committee, UEFA and national associations, commercial partners and broadcasters". "SIUUU," roared Cristiano Ronaldo. If Ajax's and Manchester United's respective comebacks against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain last week were impressive, Juventus' against Atletico Madrid was equally so. For this Atleti team, moulded in the shape of their determined manager Diego Simeone, is not one that gives away two-goal leads freely. In many senses, Juve's task of overturning Los Rojiblancos' first-leg lead was even greater than the one faced by United's B team at the Parc des Princes. PSG's capacity to crumble on Europe's greatest stage is well documented but Atletico are made of sterner stuff and, in Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez, they possess one of the strongest centre-back partnerships on the continent. It was just unfortunate for them, then, that they were tasked with shackling the greatest striker this generation - and indeed any other - has witnessed. Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at the Juventus Stadium on Wednesday evening with a point to prove, still pained … [Read more...] about The team Man Utd will be desperate to avoid in Champions League draw
