Asda tells 3,000 staff their jobs are at risk in huge restructuring amid £6.8bn sale

· February 25, 2021 ·

Asda has launched consultations with 5,000 staff over a major restructuring which could put around 3,000 back office store workers at risk. The grocer said the restructuring has been driven by the "structural shift" towards online grocery shopping during the Covid pandemic. A spokesman said the consultations will affect staff in administrative roles amid a continued slump in cash transactions. The firm said it also plans to close its Dartford and Heston home shopping centres, with around 800 jobs affected, as it looks to shift more picking operations into stores. It added that around 1,100 of its store management roles will be changed to support online grocery operations as more picking takes place in stores. Chief executive Roger Burnley said the decision will "transform" the business. "The pandemic has accelerated change across the retail sector especially the shift towards grocery home shopping and our priority is to serve customers in the way they want to shop with us," … [Read more...] about Asda tells 3,000 staff their jobs are at risk in huge restructuring amid £6.8bn sale

Ryman axes shop floor and head office jobs as it becomes latest Covid retail casualty

· February 26, 2021 ·

Stationery chain Ryman has placed a number of shop floor and head office workers on consultation amid ongoing Covid restrictions across England. The high street giant, which was founded in 1883 and is run by Dragons Den businessman Theo Paphitis, told staff their jobs are at risk in January as the company entered consultation talks. In a letter sent to thousands of employees - and seen by Mirror Money - Paphitis said the decision is "tough" but necessary to keep the business trading “for decades to come". He said that a growth in online sales during the first and second Covid lockdowns have not been enough to compensate for losses across the chain's 200 high street stores. Jobs at risk are predominantly shop floor workers and head office employees, he said. Paphitis told workers the business is "committed" to finding roles elsewhere for those affected. A Ryman spokeswoman told Mirror Money the business has launched consultations with workers in mostly city centre … [Read more...] about Ryman axes shop floor and head office jobs as it becomes latest Covid retail casualty

London’s Crossrail shunted by further delay as cost threatens to rise by £1.1bn

· August 21, 2020 ·

London's delay-hit Crossrail scheme has been held up again and will not open until the "first half of 2022", the developer of the troubled multi-billion pound project has said. Even before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the budget-busting east-west line through the capital, stretching from Berkshire to Essex, had repeatedly missed deadlines since failing to meet the original target of December 2018. In March, Transport for London (TfL) said it was suspending building work at sites, including Crossrail , to limit the spread of COVID-19 . While construction has restarted, social distancing means a maximum of 2,000 people are now allowed on Crossrail sites, which is less than 50% of the staffing levels prior to the public health crisis. In a statement, Crossrail Limited, the company responsible for the project, said: "Delivery of the Elizabeth line is now in its complex final stages and is being completed at a time of great uncertainty due to the … [Read more...] about London’s Crossrail shunted by further delay as cost threatens to rise by £1.1bn
