Several brands of vanilla ice cream have been found to contain no vanilla, no cream and no fresh milk, an investigation has found. Freshly-made ice cream, a children's play area, and an idyllic location in the Leicestershire countryside - the recently opened Dairy Barn Café near Melton Mowbray sounds like the ideal place for a trip out with the family. So, looking for fun and tasty treats, we headed north. What's the venue like? Located at Brickfield Farm, in Leesthorpe, the Dairy Barn Café was opened in March this year by dairy farm owners Peter and Vanessa Darlington. Visitors to the cafe can enjoy some Ferneley's ice cream, made on-site using milk from the farm's herd of predominantly Friesian cows. The 'Ferneleys' name is inspired by a bull owned by the family in the 1990s, who fathered a number of the cows in the herd. The cafe is bright and spacious, with plenty of tables and chairs, and some cute pictures of cows and pigs on the wall. There's even a viewing window where you can watch the ice cream being made. Winning tip: La Martinière, Île de Ré, France Legendary ice-cream shop La Martinière is on the quayside in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, and also has a quieter outpost at the far end of the island by the Baleines lighthouse. There are too many flavours to count: my three-year-old was bowled over by the simple vanilla, my husband by the local caramel fleur-de-sel (sea salt, for which the island is famous) and I couldn’t get enough of the Ferrero Rocher and the peppered raspberry.
