Arsenal are closing in on their first signing of the summer window after agreeing a fee with Sao Paulo for Marquinhos. The Brazilian teenage winger arrived in London earlier this week after the Gunners finalised terms on a deal worth around £3million. Marquinhos made his senior debut 18 months ago and has caught the eye of Arsenal’s South American scouts. According to Goal, assuming the paper work is completed in time, the versatile forward could link up with his new teammates in the summer and could be given the chance to impress during pre-season . Marquinhos has been identified as ‘a player for the future’ but that was also the case with Gabriel Martinelli, who joined as a virtual unknown from Ituano in the summer of 2019, but such was his impact that he was immediately promoted to the first team squad. Despite their likely failure to miss out on Champions League qualification, Arsenal’s transfer budget is unlikely to be adversely impacted and the club … [Read more...] about Marquinhos arrives in London as Arsenal close in on first signing of summer transfer window

Harry’s House: Juiciest lyrics on Harry Styles’ new album from sushi to ‘little freaks’ and horoscopes
Harry Styles ’ new album is finally out and, let’s face it, we now have Instagram captions and memeable lyrics to use for the next three months. Harry’s House, his third solo album which features the chart-topping lead single As It Was, arrives three years after the beauty that was Fine Line and, honestly, is just as dreamy. With song titles like Music For a Sushi Restaurant, Little Freak and Matilda, it’s safe to say that Harry’s House is as eclectic as they come in pop. Speaking about the record, Harry, 28, recently said: ‘I think everyone went through a big moment of self-reflection, a lot of navel-gazing, and I don’t know if there’s anything more navel-gazing than making an album. It’s so self-absorbed.’ He added to Better Homes & Gardens : ‘It sounds like the biggest, and the most fun, but it’s by far the most intimate.’ Well, let’s get stuck in then as Harry’s House boasts some of Hazza’s most interesting lyrics yet… Music for a Sushi Restaurant … [Read more...] about Harry’s House: Juiciest lyrics on Harry Styles’ new album from sushi to ‘little freaks’ and horoscopes

Letters: The Government must find Conservative ways to cut the cost of living
SIR – Is it not time the Conservative Party rebranded itself as Labour-lite? Very few of its present or proposed policies bear any relation to Conservative values. That the idea of a “windfall tax” on oil and gas companies is even being discussed ( report, May 18 ) is unacceptable to anyone with a sensible economic outlook. I am at a loss to think of any party worth voting for. Rupert Tickner SIR – The idea of a windfall tax on oil and gas companies is apparently “wildly popular” with the public. However, did the researchers check whether those contacted were aware of BP’s loss of £20 billion from leaving Russia? Or Shell’s losses from quitting Sakhalin-II and two Siberian oilfield projects (estimated at £4 billion), as well as the Nord Stream 2 pipeline (estimated at almost £1 billion)? Had the researchers factored in the increased investments that these and other energy companies should be making in oil and natural gas around Britain and elsewhere (and hopefully in … [Read more...] about Letters: The Government must find Conservative ways to cut the cost of living
Mountains of grain left to rot as Vladimir Putin ‘blackmails the world’
From his seafront offices in the port city of Odesa, shipping logistics boss Viktor Berestenko looks out on Ukraine’s biggest and busiest shipping port. Or at least he used to. “Take a look out that window there,” he says, pointing at a terminal where shipping containers are piled like Lego bricks across an area the size of several football pitches. “Do you see any ships coming from there? No. That is the biggest terminal in Ukraine - and it is the same situation with every other terminal in the country.” The emptiness of the sea around the port is matched by the emptiness of the office Mr Berestenko stands in. Since Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine three months ago, when Russian warships blockaded Odesa and other Black Sea ports, the 112 employees of his firm, Inter Trans Logistics, have been unable to work. Nor have any of the hundreds of other freight forwarding workers in town. Such firms are used to working in challenging conditions, their trade being forever at … [Read more...] about Mountains of grain left to rot as Vladimir Putin ‘blackmails the world’

Belmarsh prisoners ‘battered’ guard with tuna can-filled sock during violent clash
Violent disputes between prisoners and staff in HMP Belmarsh led to one officer being “battered” with a tuna can, a new documentary has revealed. Located in south-east London, HMP Belmarsh is one of the UK’s most notorious prisons, and has housed infamous names like Charles Bronson and Stephen Port. After reports that some inmates were able to set up Sharia courts within the jail’s walls, a new Channel 5 documentary, HMP Belmarsh: Maximum Security, has offered viewers a glimpse of the fighting that can sometimes take place inside. And, one prisoner, Babar Ahmad, who was detained in the UK without trial for eight years recalled an extreme example of the violence that could occur when the relationship between officers and prisoners turned sour. “Occasionally you will get a prison officer who just wants to be an idiot. This officer would do something like taking an extra milk carton, or you’re not really allowed to have one, or taking an extra pillow, taking an extra blanket,” … [Read more...] about Belmarsh prisoners ‘battered’ guard with tuna can-filled sock during violent clash
