I OFTEN see my boy punch the air as he beats his own score on the PlayStation. I have to bottle it but the competitive Dad in me wants to say, “Sorry son, who have you just beaten exactly?” Even if he doesn’t win, his name is still top of the leaderboard. He is guaranteed not to fail. A bit like Jaguar next year, then. Why so? Because all the cars in the 2019 Formula E support series will be Jags so, er, Jag will win every race. We might as well give them the manufacturers’ trophy now. Hear Jaguar's buzzing sound for its electric I-Pace That’s not to say the Jaguar iPace eTrophy won’t be exciting, far from it, it’s going to be hilarious. It’s going to be a demolition derby with 20 identical electric cars fighting for the same bit of tarmac on narrow street circuits. It’ll be more entertaining than the main event. So what’s an eTrophy race car like to drive? In a word, weird. Like someone has pressed the mute button. … [Read more...] about The i-Pace is definitely a Jag, but it calls for a different style of driving

TWO fast Fords. Both £40k. Both very orange. But the question is: Which one is better? American muscle or European hot hatch? Let’s find out. On the left, we have the Mustang GT packing a naturally aspirated 5-litre V8. Crude and cool, rear-drive, 450hp, loud, drag-strip mode, line lock for big, smokey burnouts. (Quick fact: Mustang outsold the Porsche 911 last year.) On the right, we have the Focus RS powered by a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost. Clever tech, all-wheel-drive, 375hp, legendary pops and bangs, drift mode for donuts. Clearly, none of this mischief can ever happen on a public road or you’ll end up playing mummies and daddies with Big Vin at HMP Lincoln. So we headed to Santa Pod, Britain’s drag-racing Mecca in Northants, for a quarter-mile face-off. Actually, we gatecrashed official practice for the FIA European Drag Racing Championship, had a quick duel then drove home again. Key factsFord Mustang GT Price: £43,165 Engine: 5-litre V8 0-62mph: … [Read more...] about Mustang and RS go head to head in fast Ford drag race – but which is best?

It may not have been the first of its kind, but it was the one that brought performance and practicality to the mainstream when it was introduced back in 1976. Since then, it’s crafted a legacy of some incredible — and a few not-so great — pieces of machinery. We rank them from worst to best. MkIV (1997-2004) Volkswagen’s reluctance to make the Mk4 a truly ‘hot’ hatchback led to a car that was bloated, lifeless, and downright dull. MkIII (1992-1997) Although it gained more power thanks to a larger 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, it took on a lot more weight and, as a result, was actually slower than its predecessor. To many at the time, it seemed like a disappointment and one not worthy of carrying the … [Read more...] about Every Golf GTI ranked: from worst to best
Motoring by Press Association 20/04/2018, 2:07 pm FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Send us a story Sign up to our Daily newsletter What is it? There are few names more synonymous with hot hatchbacks than Volkswagen GTI. This is the new, smallest member of the family – the Up! GTI. Though it’s really a successor to the brilliant Lupo GTI of the 2000s, Volkswagen is actually pitching it as the spiritual successor to the original, 1976 Golf GTI. The comparison isn’t as ridiculous as you might think either – with similar weight, dimensions and power figures, this pocket rocket aims for maximum fun rather than maximum speed – much the same as the iconic original. What’s new? Though it’s wrapped up in a standard Up! body, the GTI model gains some serious upgrades over the standard car. First off, there’s the engine – a 1.0-litre TSI, as featured in top-spec Up!s – but here tuned to produce 113bhp and 200Nm of … [Read more...] about First drive: The Volkswagen Up! is the junior GTI we’ve been craving
