About half way through the launch press conference for the new Kia Ceed, senior engineer Gert-Jan Teunis explained the chassis changes they’d made to the third generation of this workaday hatchback. Still the same front MacPherson struts and multi-link independent rear suspension, but with a litany of spring, damper, geometry, steering ratio and roll-bar changes as long as your arm, and so much softening at the back you’d wonder how the old car got around corners at all. These are the sorts of things that race teams do, finessing and tittivating to make a car that grips, handles predictably and inspires confidence. Under Albert Biermann, formerly of BMW, that’s what Kia is doing; more than that, in fact, since it is also creating a legend and a driving characteristic for all Kia cars in much the same way that Richard Parry-Jones’s team at Ford did for the 1993 Mondeo and the 1998 Focus. It’s part of this South Korean car maker’s master plan; to … [Read more...] about Kia Ceed review: finally a match for the VW Golf?

A RARE racing version of the "most beautiful car ever made" is now for sale for £130,000. This 1965 Jaguar E-Type was the first of the classic motors to be driven competitively by the legendary Sir Stirling Moss. The classic two-door began its life as a standard E-type, but was transformed into a road-legal lightweight racer by marque specialist Jeremy Broad in the 1980s. After being driven by Moss in the early 1990s, the car returned to its owner, and was later raced by Le Mans and touring car legend Win Percy. It has is now for sale with H&H Classics, and has an estimated price of between £110,000-£130,000. Despite the E-Type's reputation for being among the most glamorous vehicles ever to hit the road, this one is actually much more simplistic than the usual model. It has a basic interior with red leather seats, a black dashboard and a roll cage. Under the bonnet, the motor still boasts a 4.2-litre full racing specification engine. BRITAIN'S very first Volkswagen Golf GTI has emerged for sale for almost seven times its original value. The silver hatchback was one of 22 special order cars brought to the UK by VW in 1978 to promote the model launch the following year. When new, the sporty motor was valued at just £4,705, but this original model has now been given a £32,000 price tag. The left-hand drive cars were snapped up at the time but this one, which is still in original condition, is the last known remaining model. The GTI went on to become one of the most popular, best selling cars of all time thanks to its rare combination of speed and practicality. Volkswagen initially built the GTI only for its home market of West Germany but launched it onto the British market in 1978 as special order only in left-hand drive. The standard Golf had been on sale in Britain in right-hand drive since late 1974. This particular car has a silver body with black wheels and a stripped-out … [Read more...] about Britain’s first ever VW Golf GTI tipped to sell for almost SEVEN times its original value

The car, which will start production in 2020, will sit between the likes of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible and smaller, conventional cabriolets such as the Audi A3 Convertible. VW is keen to point out that it’s been building convertible vehicles for almost 70 years, starting with the drop-top version of the original Beetle. That tradition continues today with the current Beetle Cabriolet that, despite declining volumes overall, is still Europe’s second best-selling convertible. The new drop-top T-Roc will be a spiritual successor to the VW Golf Cabriolet, which was quietly dropped from the brand’s UK line-up back in 2016. The car maker is attempting to profit from the public’s voracious … [Read more...] about Green light for VW T-Roc convertible SUV
