Music icon Elton John celebrated his 15-year wedding anniversary this week with a plea for LGBT equality around the world. Elton John and David Furnish entered into a civil partnership in 2005 and were officially married in 2014 when the United Kingdom legalized same-sex unions, as noted by HuffPo . In an Instagram post, John said he and Furnish were the “lucky ones” and pledged to “fight for equality for all.” “Today @davidfurnish and I are celebrating two anniversaries: 15 years of Civil Partnership and 6 years of marriage. Our relationship gets stronger every day, and I am extremely grateful for the love we share and our two beautiful sons,” he wrote. “However, we are the lucky ones, as millions of gay people throughout the world are discriminated against because of their sexuality. This is a disgrace. We all deserve to love who we want. We will continue to fight for equality for all,” he added. Republicans rail against DOJ over FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, vowing investigations
Washington — House Republicans and allies of former President Donald Trump erupted in anger late Monday after he revealed the FBI conducted a search of his South Florida home of Mar-a-Lago, with the GOP leader in the House vowing to open investigations into the Justice Department if Republicans win control of the House in the November midterm elections. Gurinder Chadha: ‘People get defensive about the British Empire but it’s our shared history’
When she was growing up, film-maker Gurinder Chadha was captivated by a photograph which took pride of place on the mantelpiece in her family’s front room in Southall, west London. For years she assumed the dashing man in a jewel-bedecked turban must be a relative; only later did she understand his true significance. “He was Maharaja Sir Duleep Singh, the last king of the Sikhs,” she says. “He ruled Punjab, my ancestral home – vast, powerful territories stretching from Afghanistan to China.” That is, until Duleep Singh was deposed by the British Raj, exiled to Britain as a teenager and forced to give the Koh-i-Noor diamond, the most dazzling of his dynasty’s treasures , to Queen Victoria. For Chadha’s family, that photograph was symbolic not just of past glories from the land of their forefathers, but of the deeply complex shared history between two nations – Britain and India - that had brought them as immigrants to this country. “As soon as you mention the word ‘Empire’, people … [Read more...] about Gurinder Chadha: ‘People get defensive about the British Empire but it’s our shared history’
WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature
WhatsApp is bringing in a new screenshot-blocking feature that resembles SnapChat to tempt privacy-conscious users back to the service as parent company Meta struggles with shrinking sales. The changes include the ability to block screenshots of time-limited messages, hiding one’s online presence from other WhatsApp users and leaving group chats without notifying others. WhatsApp owner Meta’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: “We'll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.” The ability to block screenshots mirrors one of the main functions of SnapChat, which alerts the sender of a time-limited photo if it is screenshotted before it self-deletes. Joseph Teasdale, head of tech at Enders Analysis, said the changes were “fairly minor product updates designed to keep WhatsApp competitive”. He added: “Mark Zuckerberg seems to be trying to return to the founder-led tech startup model of placing huge, bold … [Read more...] about WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature

Lupita Nyong’o says superhero movies like ‘Black Panther’ ‘reinforces our sense of community’
The Charlottesville riots and domestic terrorist attacks have amplified arguments about gun control and racism in 2017, and the divide between Americans seems to deepen daily, with every corner of pop culture touched by current events. Yes, even superhero movies. Traditionally, the genre has provided a way for diverse strangers to come together to root for a good guy. Because a superhero is fighting an evil that is outside of our daily experience, or a villain who is against all of humanity (rather than, say, a president who some hate and some love), we can, for at least two hours, unite in a shared goal. "The beauty of cinema is you all go into a room together and agree to suspend your disbelief and share this experience of another world," Lupita Nyong'o, who stars in Marvel's upcoming Black Panther movie, said during an interview with Teen Vogue Tuesday. "For that moment, you are all one in that space, experiencing the same thing. It reinforces our sense of … [Read more...] about Lupita Nyong’o says superhero movies like ‘Black Panther’ ‘reinforces our sense of community’
