Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Tuesday said his country and Denmark plan to stop relying solely on the European Union for coronavirus jabs. The announcement appeared to be a rebuke to the EU's joint vaccine procurement program . Kurz said both countries plan to work with Israel to produce second-generation vaccines. While Israel has vaccinated a large part of its population, the EU has faced criticism for its slow vaccine rollout . Austria looks ahead to new variants Kurz said it was right in principle to take a European-wide approach to inoculation. However, he maintained that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has been "too slow" to approve vaccines, and drew attention to production problems and delivery failures . "We must prepare for further mutations and should no longer be dependent solely on the EU in the production of second-generation vaccines," Kurz told the Austria Press Agency. Austria would "no longer rely on the EU in the future and will in … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Austria and Denmark break ranks with EU on vaccines

India fake news problem fueled by digital illiteracy
In the summer of 2018, rumors began circulating on WhatsApp groups about a kidnapping gang operating in India's western state of Maharashtra. The rumors eventually inspired a lynch mob that killed five migrant workers who were suspected of being kidnappers after they arrived at a village in the state's Dhule district. This wasn't an isolated case. Child-abduction rumors spread by viral WhatsApp messages were connected to at least 17 murders across India in 2018. Rumors of cattle traders and organ harvesters also resulted in violent attacks on innocent people. Since then, India's fake news problem has continued to grow . More than 400 million Indians now use the internet, but digital literacy and social media regulation have yet to catch up. "People get cheap internet-based tech on their smartphones, but they don't have the necessary education on how to assess the veracity of claims made in the messages," said Rajneil Kamath a publisher at the Indian fact-checking portal … [Read more...] about India fake news problem fueled by digital illiteracy
Britain’s biggest family the Radfords forced to shut their pie business after orders boom following their new TV show
BRITAIN’S biggest family has been forced to temporarily shut their pie business after orders boomed after their new TV show. Sue, 45, and Noel, 50, Radford, from Morecombe, Lancashire, are the stars of Channel 5’s new show 22 and Counting, which launched last week. The four-part series sees Sue, Noel, and their 22 kids deal with being locked down together in their 10-bedroom home during the pandemic. The family famously don’t rely on benefits, and fund their family with their Radford Pie Company. However, following the show launching on February 22, orders of their pies boomed and they were forced to close the doors of the business to keep up with requests. Taking to Facebook, the couple wrote: “For everyone enquiring about order pies online. “We have closed the website site for a few days just so we can try and catch up with the orders that came in after our program aired on Monday. “We had plenty of stock ready to go but we were inundated with orders. “We took … [Read more...] about Britain’s biggest family the Radfords forced to shut their pie business after orders boom following their new TV show
Boeing tests automated ‘Loyal Wingman’ jet in 1st flight
The Royal Australian Air Force and Boeing have teamed up for their first test flight of a pilotless fighter-like jet in South Australia. The "Loyal Wingman" provides new military strategies through its autonomous technology. Australia and the aerospace giant announced Tuesday the successful flight, which took place on Saturday. Loyal Wingman took off under its own power and flew on a predetermined route over the Australian desert, before flying at various different speeds and altitudes to test its systems and demonstrating the performance of design. The fact that the jet is functional and effective without a pilot is key to new approaches in military strategy — with this particular uncrewed aircraft designed to provide air support to a human pilot in another plane. "The heart of this program is the autonomous systems, being a part of a manned, unmanned team approach," said the chief of the Royal Australian Air Force, Mel Hupfeld. The fighter-like jet is 11.6 meters long … [Read more...] about Boeing tests automated ‘Loyal Wingman’ jet in 1st flight
SAS star Ant Middleton axed by Channel 4 after ‘inappropriate comments’ to female staff
Ant Middleton was axed by Channel 4 after complaints were made by female crew over “inappropriate comments”, the Mirror can reveal. Yesterday we told how TV bosses said they will never work with the star again because of his “personal conduct”. And the decision came months after he was heavily criticised in June last year after he branded Black Lives Matter protesters “absolute scum”. But his BLM remarks were not the sole reason for the decision to ditch him from the SAS Who Dares Win series. A number of staff raised concerns with makers Minnow Films and Channel 4 during an end of year review where they were allowed to speak anonymously. At the end of 2020, the allegations and complaints from a number of women regarding Ant’s comments towards them on set were then investigated. They felt the way he spoke to them was “inappropriate”. Following the investigation, Channel 4 held meetings and decided to stop working with Ant, 40, and informed him of this decision on Monday. … [Read more...] about SAS star Ant Middleton axed by Channel 4 after ‘inappropriate comments’ to female staff
