The Promenade Relay 2019 took place on the Marine Drive instead of its usual venue because of roadworks on the promenade.Fifty-six teams entered.The fundraiser was held in support of Manx Diabetic Group’s Monitors4Kids campaign.Monitors4Kids is a parent-led campaign with the aim of raising money to end finger-prick blood testing in children, with newer, painless technology.Money raised from the campaign aims to provide children in the Isle of Man with sensors, which will enable monitoring of blood sugar levels on a mobile phone or handset - and alerts parents when levels dip dangerously low.All entry fees and any sponsorship raised by participants will be donated directly to the charity.The Wet Bandits were the victorious team, completing the 10km race in 32 minutes and 54 seconds and choosing to donate their winnings to … [Read more...] about Marine Drive race raises £10,000 for good cause

Three Weston volunteer firefighters, 1103 steps, 51 flights of stairs, 25kg of kit. The countdown is on to this year’s Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge for Kylie Stenton, Josh Lee and Bernie Miller. On May 18, they will be among the 1000 firefighters racing up Auckland’s Sky Tower in a bid to raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. It has become an annual challenge for Mrs Stenton, now in her third year entering the event. She said she entered for the same reasons she had been volunteering for the Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade for the past eight years. “It’s a really good reason to volunteer for something and raise money and have fun. “It’s really good personal discipline, it’s a good excuse to keep fit and it’s a fantastic event,” she said. Last year, she reached the top of the Sky Tower in 18min 28sec. This year, she hoped to beat her time, but the ultimate goal was raising money for a good cause. Nottinghamshire County Council is looking for more community heroes and heroines for this year’s Chairman’s Community Hero Award, writes Coun Sue Saddington. Nominations are open now for people who go the extra mile for a neighbour, an organisation or their local community. Hastings Winkle Club will be able to help local charities and good causes this year with £20,000 to donate. The news came as the 119 year old local charity Hastings Winkle Club held its AGM in the East Hastings Sea Angling Association last Sunday, when around 50 members attended. Chairman, Christian Burton spoke of another successful year with fundraising and membership increased. Nottinghamshire County Council Chairman, Councillor Mrs Sue Saddington has so far presented Community Hero awards to a community champion, a food bank organiser, a Girl Guide leader and a hospice volunteer. Nottinghamshire Community Heroes is seeking nominations for people who go the extra mile for a neighbour, an organisation or a local community. Councillor Saddington is appealing for more nominations from across the county as the chance to be recognised is offered once again.
