A-level results down on past two years but still higher than before Covid
A-level grades in the UK are lower than the past two years but still remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. Hundreds of thousands of pupils across England, Wales and Northern Ireland nervously collected their results today , one week ahead of GCSE students. It was the first time they’d sat exams since the Covid pandemic, and they expected to face tough competition to get into university this year. Around 40% of students were expected to use the clearing system – used by universities and colleges to fill remaining courses when applicants don’t secure their first choice. The Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS) chief executive Clare Marchant warned today will not be ‘pain-free’ for all and that offer-making has been ‘more conservative’ this year. Grades were expected to drop back from 2020 and 2021 levels – when pupils were assessed by their teachers. This year’s grade aim to reflect a midway point between last year’s record surge in high grades … [Read more...] about A-level results down on past two years but still higher than before Covid
Games Inbox: The end of zombies in video games, Knights Of The Old Republic reboot, and Stray oddity
The Thursday letters page considers the hidden costs of Xbox Game Pass, as one reader imagines The Elder Scrolls TV show. To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected] The perfect enemy news about Dead Island 2 made me realise two things 1) I don’t care about Dead Island 2 anymore and 2) zombies have finally started to die out as the must-have video game villain. It took long enough, they were massive for well over a decade, but I feel that they’ve finally fallen out of fashion. Sure, there are still some games being made with them but it’s no longer the epidemic it used to be, where every second game had ‘Dead’ in the name. It’s obvious why zombies were popular for so long. Not only were they riding the wave of general popularity in movies and TV, but the one thing video games always need is a human-like enemy that you can kill by the dozen and not feel bad about. For years it was Nazis and then when people got tired of that it was … [Read more...] about Games Inbox: The end of zombies in video games, Knights Of The Old Republic reboot, and Stray oddity
Will R. Kelly go to jail? If found guilty, he could face decades in prison
R. Kelly was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Illinois's Cook County Court on Friday, according to a Chicago Sun-Times Friday report. The charges related to the alleged sexual assault of four victims, three of which the Sun-Times said were between 13 and 16 years old. A Chicago judge signed off on a warrant for the R&B singer's arrest. The Class 2 felony charge carries a three- to seven-year sentence in the state of Illinois. If Kelly is found guilty on all 10 charges, he could face up to 70 years in prison. Kelly is expected to appear in a Chicago court regarding the charges on March 8, according to the report. While unconfirmed, the charges likely stem from new evidence attorney Michael Avenatti gave to Kim Foxx, Chicago's Cook County state attorney. Avenatti said he received two VHS tapes that allegedly showed Kelly engaging in sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl. While the date of the videos was not released, Avenatti said the … [Read more...] about Will R. Kelly go to jail? If found guilty, he could face decades in prison
Playmakers explores the trials and tribulations of a first grader in ‘Junie B. Jones: The Musical’
Welcome to the first grade world of Junie B. Jones, where best friends from kindergarten find new best friends and eyeglasses are the bane of anyone's existence. Well, the bane of a first grader's existence anyway, because glasses are unfamiliar and embarrassing. In fact, there's an entire song dedicated to glasses in Playmakers of Baton Rouge's production, "Junie B. Jones: The Musical," opening Friday in the Reilly Theatre. The show opens Playmakers' 40th season and is based on Barbara Park's "Junie B. Jones" children's book series, which follows almost-6-year-old Junie B.'s adventures through kindergarten and first grade. But only first grade will be the setting in Playmakers' production, where Junie B., played by 15-year-old University High School sophomore Evie Trahan, records life as a first grader in her diary. "Junie is outgoing and just wants to fit in with all the cool people," Trahan said. "But she doesn't just want to be popular — she wants to be the boss, and … [Read more...] about Playmakers explores the trials and tribulations of a first grader in ‘Junie B. Jones: The Musical’

Margaret Ferrier’s covid breach is embarrassing for Nicola Sturgeon
Sarah Smith @BBCsarahsmith on Twitter Published 2 October 2020 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Five days a week, every week, Nicola Sturgeon appears on TV, taking questions about her coronavirus policies and urging every one of us to abide by the rules. So for the MP who has committed the most egregious breach of the regulations - possibly of the law - to be one of her own is acutely embarrassing. The SNP leader who has been quick to condemn others for breaking the rules has made no attempt to defend or excuse Margaret Ferrier. Who is Margaret Ferrier? This is the first minister whose chief medical advisor resigned for breaking lockdown rules back in April and who demanded the sacking of the PM's chief advisor Dominic Cummings after he was accused of breaching the regulations.
