· March 4, 2021 ·

MONEY saving expert Martin Lewis has gone head-to-head with Chancellor Rishi Sunak over his Budget. We round up seven things the pair thrashed out during their interview on the Martin Lewis Money Show . Income tax freeze - how it will affect low earners As part of his Budget yesterday, Mr Sunak said the tax-free personal allowance - the amount you can earn before paying tax will be frozen for five years. The rate will rise as planned from April 2021 but then stay at that threshold until April 2026. For basic rate taxpayers, the threshold will be held at £12,570 and £50,270 for higher rate tax payers. Martin pointed out to the Chancellor that this will affect basic rate taxpayers - anyone earning below £50,000 - as they will start to pay more tax. This is because if your wages rise, but the tax thresholds don’t, then it means that more of your income is being taxed each year. What is the personal allowance? Genius food waste app promises to knock £630 off your annual supermarket bill

· March 5, 2021 ·

The average household in the UK wastes £720 a year on food that ends up in the bin, figures show, while 9% of the world goes starving. The findings, released by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), paint a bleak picture of household waste amid a green-revolution, with the number of supermarkets cutting plastic waste and donating to food banks at an all-time high. According to WRAP, one third of the world's food is thrown out every year - making it one of the largest CO2 emitters in the world. More than 70% of this is household waste - 4.5million tonnes to be exact, enough to fill 38million wheelie bins. So what are we doing to tackle the problem at home? Alex Vlassopulos and Jamie Ritchie are the founders of food waste app, Kitche . Created in 2018, their vision is to tackle household waste - which collectively costs families £15billion a year. By teaching consumers how to be smarter with their food, Kitche could save households £630 over 12 months. The Covid-19 recovery has cost the UK £407 billion, Rishi Sunak admitted today in his Budget speech. The Chancellor announced an additional £65 billion in spending on the recovery - extending furlough and other support for firms and workers through to September. He announced the creation of eight "free ports" - a scheme popular with Tory MPs to create "tax havens" within the UK. Duty on alcohol and fuel will both be frozen. And the minimum wage will increase by 19p an hour to £8.91 for over-23s. And he announced the creation of a Treasury branch office in Darlington - near to his own Richmond constituency. Describing the battering the economy had suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic, he said the forecasts show that this year the Government has borrowed a "record" £355 billion, the equivalent of 17% of the UK's national income - and the highest figure since World War II. He told MPs: "Next year, as we continue our unprecedented response to this crisis, borrowing is … [Read more...] about Budget 2021: £407billion cost of Covid unveiled in grim figures from Rishi Sunak
